VP, Senior Underwriting Manager – Surety Commercial

This is a fully remote position, open to applicants in New Jersey, +2 more states.

📋 Description

• Lead a team of market-oriented underwriters while providing ongoing coaching and mentorship.

• Supervise the development plans for underwriters and enhance their capabilities.

• Create processes and assess underwriting policies in line with strategic business objectives.

• Detect market trends and exposure risks, collaborating with actuaries on pricing and rate structures.

• Cultivate relationships with internal stakeholders to enhance service quality, commercial viability, and customer satisfaction.

• Engage in leadership team meetings, offering expert advice on policies, projects, and change initiatives.

• Contribute to the overall business strategy and ensure underwriting strategies align with broader business objectives.

• Underwrite and evaluate new and renewal business within assigned authority limits.

• Propose and execute action plans based on agency business portfolios and profit/growth trends.

• Establish and maintain relationships with agents and brokers to foster retention and secure profitable new business.

• Collaborate with customers and distributors to assess insurance needs and deliver appropriate solutions.

• Travel as needed within the region, approximately 15–20% of the time.

⛳️ Requirements

• Bachelor's degree with 10 or more years of experience in Underwriting, Market Facing, Broker, Carrier, or Risk Management within the Commercial Insurance sector, OR a Bachelor's degree with 20 or more years of experience in Claims or Underwriting Support within the Commercial Insurance industry.

• Proven experience in a specialized line of business or market segment.

• A minimum of 2 years of experience in people management.

• Advanced knowledge and practical experience in relevant lines of business.

• Experience in strategic planning and execution.

• Strong skills in team building and organization.

• Excellent verbal and written communication skills.

• Strong negotiation capabilities.

• Experience managing complex portfolios.

• Technical expertise in insurance industry operations and processes.

• Understanding of risk selection and strategic elements in anticipating market conditions.

• CPCU designation preferred.
