This is a fully remote position, open to applicants in Minnesota, +1 more state.
• Oversee a team of multi-line, multi-industry production underwriters focused on attracting and underwriting middle market business.
• Propel profitable growth through securing new business, maintaining renewal retention, achieving rate targets, and managing exposure bases.
• Hold responsibility for the designated territory while meeting profit and premium objectives.
• Direct the underwriting process for intricate new and renewal business, involving risk assessment, pricing, contractual integrity, and account management.
• Ensure that underwriting decisions align with delegated authority and adhere to regulatory standards.
• Mentor and develop underwriters in technical expertise and quality benchmarks.
• Evaluate risks, identify exposures and controls, price risks, establish terms and conditions, and document the rationale behind underwriting decisions.
• Act as a subject matter expert for complex risk scenarios.
• Manage portfolios and implement business plans concerning written premium, loss ratios, renewal retention, pricing, and expense oversight.
• Conduct both in-person and virtual sales meetings with agencies and insured parties.
• Seek new business opportunities and cultivate a robust pipeline of prospects.
• Foster relationships with producers and agencies.
• Collaborate with underwriting teams, Sales and Distribution, Underwriting Center, Underwriting Support, Risk Control, Legal, Claims, and other internal associates.
• Represent UFG in the marketplace and effectively communicate its underwriting, risk control, and claims capabilities.
• A four-year college degree is preferred.
• Completion of AU Designation, CIC, and/or CPCU designations is preferred.
• Leadership or management certification or educational experience is preferred.
• A minimum of 7 years of commercial lines underwriting experience is preferred.
• Advanced knowledge in risk evaluation and insurance contracts.
• Ability to implement underwriting strategies for the assigned territory and make sound underwriting decisions.
• Capacity to lead a team through collaboration, persuasion, vision, emotional intelligence, and talent development.
• Proven success in building and maintaining business relationships with key clients.
• Strong leadership capabilities, including mentoring, coaching, and training.
• Ability to thrive in a fast-paced environment while effectively prioritizing and completing tasks.
• Exceptional customer service skills.
• Proficient stakeholder management skills with the capability to build trust with internal and external partners.
• Strong analytical and problem-solving skills with meticulous attention to detail.
• Excellent communication and negotiation abilities.
• Effective time management skills with the capacity to meet deadlines and effective dates.
• Advanced understanding of the agency force and the current market landscape.
• Strong sales acumen with a proven track record of expanding a profitable book of business.
• A valid driver’s license and acceptable motor vehicle record are required.
• Willingness to travel within the assigned territory for agency visits and marketing events.
• Openness to work outside of standard business hours when necessary.
