This is a fully remote position, open to applicants in New York.
• Lead, manage, and enhance the underwriting team by providing coaching, mentoring, performance management, training, and establishing clear expectations.
• Supervise merchant underwriting operations and assess risk exposure across various products and processing relationships.
• Set risk parameters and ensure that decisions are in accordance with company policies, Card Brand standards, and risk appetite.
• Act as the escalation point and decision-maker for complex, high-volume, or high-risk accounts.
• Assess financial, credit, processing, fraud, and operational risks.
• Define approval structures, reserves, ACH delays, and other risk mitigation strategies.
• Track portfolio performance, underwriting quality, loss trends, and emerging risks.
• Utilize data and analysis to pinpoint issues and suggest risk-management strategies and process enhancements.
• Ensure compliance with Card Brand, KYC, AML, and company regulations.
• Collaborate with Compliance, Risk, Operations, Sales, and other stakeholders on critical issues.
• Act as a subject-matter expert in underwriting, credit, payments, risk management, and financial analysis.
• Promote ongoing improvement of underwriting policies, procedures, controls, and workflows.
• Manage fraud-risk practices including identification, investigation, escalation, verification, and control measures.
• Utilize internal resources and third-party tools to minimize exposure to fraudulent accounts.
• Bachelor’s degree or a comparable combination of education and experience.
• Over 10 years of relevant experience in underwriting, credit, risk, payments, banking, or financial services.
• Proven management or leadership experience.
• In-depth knowledge of merchant acquiring, payment processing, credit underwriting, financial statement analysis, fraud risk, and payment-related risk exposure.
• Capability to evaluate financial, credit, operational, fraud, and processing risks while exercising independent judgment.
• Familiarity with risk-mitigation tools, such as reserves, ACH delays, and other approval criteria.
• Understanding of Card Brand requirements, KYC/AML principles, underwriting policies, and relevant risk and compliance standards.
• Strong leadership, communication, coaching, problem-solving, and decision-making abilities.
• Proficient in risk-management systems, underwriting tools, and data analysis.
• Ability to collaborate effectively with Sales, Operations, Risk, Compliance, and other stakeholders.
• Experience in leading fraud-risk identification and mitigation initiatives.
• Excellent management, communication, interpersonal, organizational, and leadership skills.
• Strong written and verbal communication skills.
• High attention to detail.
• Capability to thrive in a fast-paced environment.
• Industry knowledge is essential.
• Experience in banking and credit card issuing is a plus.
• Preferred knowledge in payments, merchant acquiring, credit, banking, or financial services.
