This is a fully remote position, open to applicants in United States.
• Lead, manage, and develop a team of underwriters, encompassing hiring, coaching, performance management, and career advancement.
• Propel the development and expansion of Commercial Habitational programs with significant autonomy and decision-making power.
• Establish underwriting strategy, risk appetite, and pricing parameters for the commercial habitational portfolio.
• Take ownership of portfolio expansion, rate adequacy, and loss ratio performance.
• Underwrite and generate new and complex habitational accounts, including risk assessment, negotiation of terms and conditions, and account pricing.
• Provide referral and escalation authority for the broader underwriting team.
• Monitor market trends and competitive activities, translating insights into underwriting guidelines, product improvements, and market strategies.
• Cultivate and sustain senior-level relationships with brokers, agencies, and reinsurance partners.
• Act as MSI's primary contact for strategic accounts and drive new business development across the team's territory.
• Ensure that issued policies meet the requirements of carriers and reinsurers.
• Collaborate with Legal, Compliance, and Reinsurance on treaty terms, audits, and regulatory issues.
• Develop and enforce underwriting guidelines, authority levels, and quality control measures.
• Partner with senior leadership on business planning, budgeting, and goal-setting initiatives.
• Provide regular reports on production, profitability, and team performance in relation to strategic plans.
• Bachelor's degree, ideally in Business, Economics, Marketing, or Engineering, or equivalent professional experience.
• Over 10 years of experience in Commercial underwriting within an insurance carrier, MGA/program administrator, or agency/brokerage, with extensive experience in underwriting large or complex accounts.
• Significant experience in E&S commercial underwriting is essential; habitational experience is highly preferred.
• At least 5 years of experience in directly managing and developing underwriting personnel, with a proven ability to build high-performing teams and hold direct reports accountable for production and profitability objectives.
• Proven capability to define underwriting strategy and risk appetite, as well as to manage profit-and-loss outcomes for a book of business.
• Demonstrated urgency in problem-solving and the ability to meet broker and market service expectations.
• Above-average technical proficiency with a proven ability to navigate multiple systems, tools, and digital platforms effectively.
• Proficiency in MS Office (Excel, PowerPoint, Word, Outlook).
• Exceptional oral and written communication skills.
• Willingness to travel approximately 1-2 times per month to meet with agents, brokers, and reinsurance partners, and/or attend team meetings.
• Capability to thrive in a fast-paced environment and collaborate effectively with colleagues.
• Proven ability to work effectively in a remote setting, showcasing strong self-management and accountability.
• Willingness to travel up to 25% as required.
