Traveling Fiber Optical Repair Technician

This is a fully remote position, open to applicants in Nebraska, +3 more states.

📋 Description

• Install, splice, test, troubleshoot, and maintain the infrastructure of fiber optic cabling.

• Execute fusion and mechanical splicing for single-mode, multi-mode, and ribbon fibers.

• Prepare and terminate fiber optic cables utilizing industry-standard techniques and tools.

• Install and manage fiber within ODFs, splice trays, enclosures, and patch panels.

• Strip, cleave, clean, and safeguard fibers.

• Label and route fiber in accordance with documentation and design standards.

• Utilize OTDRs, OLTS, power meters, visual fault locators, and associated equipment to certify and troubleshoot fiber links.

• Conduct insertion loss, return loss, and reflectance measurements.

• Analyze OTDR traces to detect faults, splices, and connector losses.

• Generate test results, reports, and documentation for client acceptance and compliance verification.

• Diagnose and rectify complex fiber optic network issues and respond to service interruptions.

• Perform root cause analysis and implement corrective measures.

• Carry out high-count and ribbon fiber splicing, including mass fusion splicing.

• Manage fiber assignments, routing, and labeling during large-scale installations.

• Assist in network expansion, migration, and reconfiguration projects while minimizing disruptions.

• Maintain detailed records of splicing, testing, and repair activities.

• Ensure adherence to ITU-T, FOA, BICSI, TIA/EIA, NEC, safety regulations, and company policies.

• Participate in quality audits.

• Support as-built documentation, change control, and archiving of test results.

• Operate within mission-critical environments with precision, accurate documentation, and compliance to safety and quality standards.

• Travel approximately 90% of the time.

⛳️ Requirements

• A minimum of 3–5 years of hands-on experience in fiber optic splicing, testing, and installation (Tier 2 or Tier 3 level).

• Comprehensive understanding of optical fiber theory, including attenuation, dispersion, and signal integrity.

• Proficiency with high-precision fusion splicers (e.g., Fujikura, Sumitomo, or INNO).

• Ability to interpret fiber network design drawings, splice schematics, and optical budgets.

• Experience in both inside plant (ISP) and outside plant (OSP) environments.

• Advanced skills in using OTDRs, light source/power meters, visual inspection scopes, and fiber identifiers.

• Capability to interpret and troubleshoot complex OTDR traces and reflectometry data.

• Knowledge of fiber characterization testing, DWDM/CWDM network considerations, and loss budgets.

• Comfortable working in data center environments, including hot/cold aisles and structured cabling systems.

• Understanding of best practices in cable management, rack layouts, and physical infrastructure documentation.

• Experience in live network environments with strict uptime SLAs.

• In-depth knowledge of safety standards related to fiber optic work, including laser safety and confined space awareness.

• Familiarity with environmental and electrical regulations (OSHA, NEC, and local standards).

• Proven track record of following quality assurance processes and delivering precise workmanship.

• Strong communication and interpersonal skills for collaboration with engineers, project managers, and clients.

• Demonstrated leadership in mentoring junior technicians or managing small project teams.

• Exceptional time management, prioritization, and multitasking abilities under tight deadlines.

• Analytical mindset with a keen attention to detail and a commitment to accuracy.

• Proactive and self-motivated, capable of working independently in remote or field conditions.

• Proficiency in digital documentation tools, fiber management software, and reporting systems.

• Competence with Microsoft Office Suite, Google Workspace, or similar documentation platforms.

• Familiarity with network monitoring tools and fundamental Layer 1–2 network concepts.

• Must reside near a major airport.
