This is a fully remote position, open to applicants in Texas.
• Assist in the development of new transmission projects through power flow and associated planning analyses.
• Oversee transmission planning studies that include power flow, contingency analysis, short circuit assessment, and voltage/reactive evaluations.
• Evaluate potential interconnection points and provide insights on project feasibility and design.
• Create and maintain study cases as well as transmission system models.
• Prepare, submit, and manage requests for interconnection and transmission services.
• Manage the portfolio interconnection tracker, reporting on milestones, readiness requirements, payment forecasts, financial security postings, decision points, and any timeline delays.
• Act as the technical liaison with transmission owners, utilities, and ISO/RTO interconnection personnel.
• Facilitate scoping meetings and study review calls; negotiate study assumptions, outcomes, and mitigation strategies.
• Review, diagnose, and independently confirm the results of ISO/RTO and utility interconnection studies.
• Test and suggest alternative transmission mitigations to minimize costs and schedule risks.
• Assess costs for network upgrades, impacts on affected systems, and risks associated with restudy.
• Advise on queue strategy decisions regarding whether to proceed, modify, suspend, or withdraw requests.
• Assist in the negotiation and execution of interconnection agreements, facilities study agreements, and related contracts.
• Interpret and apply ISO/RTO tariffs, business practice manuals, planning criteria, and FERC interconnection standards.
• Monitor tariff and process reforms that impact the development portfolio.
• Collaborate with HVDC Engineering specialists to develop and validate interconnection analysis models.
• Organize, procure, and oversee consultants conducting interconnection and planning studies.
• Review the deliverables from consultants for quality and accuracy.
• Engage in RTO stakeholder meetings, planning working groups, and industry forums.
• Represent Grid United's stance on interconnection and planning issues.
• Provide technical insights on routing, sizing, interconnection point selection, cost estimates, and acquisition due diligence.
• Mentor and evaluate Transmission & Interconnection Engineers.
• Establish study standards and documentation practices for the team.
• A Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering from an ABET-accredited university with a focus on Power Systems is essential.
• A minimum of 5 years of experience in transmission planning, interconnection, or transmission services.
• Direct experience in filing and managing interconnection requests at a developer, utility, ISO/RTO, or consultancy is required.
• Practical proficiency with at least one of the following tools: PSS/E, PSLF, Powergem TARA, or PowerWorld Simulator.
• Familiarity with production cost modeling tools such as PROMOD, GridView, or PLEXOS is advantageous.
• Knowledge of generator and load interconnection processes, cluster studies, and ISO/RTO tariffs across various regions.
• Proven ability to establish productive working relationships with utility and ISO/RTO personnel and effectively represent an organization in technical discussions and negotiations.
• Understanding of NERC reliability standards, regional planning criteria, and applicable state and federal regulations related to electric power systems.
• Planning-level knowledge of HVDC technology and systems, substation configurations, transmission line design and ratings, and cost estimations.
• Experience in managing consultants and external study vendors, including oversight of scope, budget, and deliverable review.
• Highly organized with the capability to manage multiple concurrent requests, deadlines, and financial obligations.
• Willingness and adaptability to operate in a fast-paced environment with changing priorities.
• Self-motivated with the determination to succeed amid uncertainty and limited information.
• Excellent communication skills with the ability to translate complex technical findings into actionable business recommendations.
• Previous supervisory or mentoring experience is preferred.
• A Master's degree in Electrical Engineering or an MBA is preferred.
• A Professional Engineer (PE) license is a plus.
