Team Lead – Trading

This is a fully remote position, open to applicants in United States.

📋 Description

• Lead a team in the development of Alpaca's algorithmic trading platform.

• Design and architect the platform while actively contributing code and making essential technical decisions.

• Take ownership of the technical direction and architecture of the team's services, including making trade-off decisions and considering long-term impacts.

• Manage the roadmap and oversee delivery by scoping, sequencing, and predictably shipping engineering tasks.

• Oversee daily operations, including sprint or cycle planning, removing obstacles for engineers, and ensuring stakeholder visibility.

• Establish code and design quality standards through reviews, design documentation, and personal contributions.

• Ensure production reliability, latency, and accuracy targets, along with managing on-call health and incident resolutions.

• Hire, onboard, conduct one-on-one meetings, provide feedback, manage performance, and facilitate career development for a small engineering team.

• Collaborate across functions with product, operations, compliance, clearing, and various engineering teams.

⛳️ Requirements

• A strong and experienced software engineer at a senior or staff level who has led a team, either formally or in a tech lead capacity.

• Proven ability to nurture and develop engineers through mentoring, providing feedback, and elevating the skills of those around you.

• A history of delivering complex systems on time, including effective scoping, sequencing, and making appropriate cuts when necessary.

• Proficiency in both low-level and high-level programming languages such as C/C++, Go, Zig, Rust, Java, Scala, and Python.

• Experience in optimizing for low latency and high throughput.

• Familiarity with messaging queues and message brokers.

• An analytical, data-oriented mindset with strong problem-solving skills.

• Knowledge of algorithms, distributed systems, scalability, high availability, databases, low latency systems, and concurrency control.

• Proficient in system design with skills in object-oriented data modeling, service-oriented architectures, and system abstraction.

• Experience in the development and implementation of Order Management Systems (OMS) and Risk Management Systems (RMS).

• Excellent written and verbal communication skills, especially when engaging with non-engineering stakeholders.

• Ability to navigate ambiguity and work within limited processes, typical of an early-stage startup environment.

• Previous software engineering experience in trading or exchange systems, including OMS, EMS, exchanges, market making, algorithmic trading, and quantitative trading.

• Prior experience in leading engineering teams.
