Team Lead, Mortgage Underwriting

This is a fully remote position, open to applicants in United States.

📋 Description

• Underwrite all first and second mortgages within the designated approval authority.

• Oversee the mortgage pipeline to ensure prompt loan decisions.

• Verify that mortgage loan files adhere to secondary market guidelines, program specifications, credit union policies, and regulatory standards.

• Assess and review loan files for accuracy, completeness, data integrity, and effective credit risk evaluation.

• Manage the mortgage pipeline, ensuring balanced workloads and service-level objectives.

• Act as a subject matter expert on mortgage products, underwriting guidelines, and intricate loan scenarios.

• Provide leadership, coaching, training, and performance support to the underwriting team.

• Identify and apply process enhancements, workflow efficiencies, and automation solutions.

• Utilize technology, automation, and AI-powered tools to enhance underwriting efficiency, decision quality, workflow oversight, and member experience.

• Analyze production and quality metrics to spot trends and propose improvements.

• Engage in system upgrades, digital mortgage projects, and departmental initiatives.

• Collaborate with Mortgage Loan Officers, Operations, Secondary Market, and external vendors.

• Stay updated on industry regulations, mortgage products, investor guidelines, and emerging technologies.

• Ensure compliance with Credit Union policies and relevant regulations.

• Undertake additional duties and special projects as needed.


⛳️ Requirements

• Bachelor's degree in finance, business administration, or a related field is preferred.

• At least five (5) years of relevant experience in a credit union, bank, or other financial institution.

• Minimum of three (3) years of leadership, supervisory, or team management experience, including coaching, performance management, workload distribution, and employee development.

• Preferred: Proven experience in leveraging technology, workflow automation, digital mortgage platforms, and AI-enabled tools to enhance operational efficiency, decision-making, reporting, or member service.

• Exceptional problem-solving, organizational, analytical, verbal, and written communication skills.

• Strong decision-making abilities and time management skills.

• Results-oriented, service-driven, self-motivated, and capable of working independently.

• In-depth knowledge of secondary market guidelines and regulatory mandates.

• Compliance with SAFE Act requirements and NMLRS registration obligations.

• High level of integrity and trustworthiness.

• Proficient in Microsoft Office and Encompass or similar loan origination systems.

• Reliable internet connection with sufficient speeds for video conferencing and screen sharing.

• Smartphone with up-to-date iOS/Android operating system.

• Capability to sit for extended periods at a workstation and operate a computer.

• Ability to communicate with colleagues and customers via email, chat, teleconference, and/or phone.

• Candidates must reside within the United States, excluding Montana, Nebraska, Rhode Island, and Puerto Rico.

• U.S. work authorization is necessary; current or future sponsorship is not available.
