Tamper Operator – Railway Maintenance

This is a fully remote position, open to applicants in United States.

📋 Description

• Operate rail-mounted tamper machines to ensure proper alignment, leveling, and compaction of track ballast beneath railway ties.

• Adhere to track maintenance schedules and procedures as directed by the Track Supervisor.

• Adjust and calibrate tamping equipment to meet specific rail conditions and tolerances.

• Read and interpret track diagrams, work orders, and machine settings accurately.

• Conduct routine pre-operation inspections of tamping machines to ensure functionality.

• Carry out basic maintenance and troubleshooting tasks on tamper equipment.

• Collaborate with maintenance-of-way personnel, including surfacing crews, welders, and track inspectors.

• Report any unsafe conditions, track defects, or equipment malfunctions promptly.

• Maintain precise daily logs and production records.

• Travel to various rail construction and maintenance job sites as needed.


⛳️ Requirements

• High school diploma or GED is preferred.

• A minimum of 1–2 years of experience in railroad maintenance or operating rail-bound machinery is required.

• A valid driver’s license is necessary; a CDL may be required based on jurisdiction.

• Certification for railway equipment operation (such as FRA-compliant training or company-specific certification) is essential.

• A strong understanding of track geometry and alignment principles is important.

• Mechanical aptitude with the ability to perform minor repairs is required.

• Knowledge of railway safety protocols, including track protection and flagging, is necessary.

• Ability to work both independently and as part of a maintenance crew is essential.

• Effective communication and problem-solving skills are required.

• Familiarity with railway maintenance practices and safety standards, including AREMA and FRA regulations, is important.

• Ability to work outdoors in all weather conditions and in proximity to moving trains and heavy equipment is necessary.

• Willingness to work night shifts, weekends, and extended hours when required.

• Capability to sit, stand, and operate equipment for extended periods is essential.

• Ability to lift and carry materials weighing up to 50 lbs is required.

• Competence in climbing on and off rail equipment safely is necessary.

• Good vision, hearing, and hand-eye coordination are essential.
