Systems Engineer

This is a fully remote position, open to applicants in United States.

📋 Description

• Take ownership of the internal request queue by triaging, resolving, escalating, and ensuring requests are tracked to completion.

• Manage Google Workspace and identity systems, encompassing accounts, groups, SSO integrations, security policies, and both onboarding and offboarding processes.

• Assist in the provisioning and upkeep of cloud infrastructure, which includes managing accounts, IAM roles, basic networking, resource tagging, and cost visibility.

• Deploy and manage internal applications on Kubernetes utilizing Helm and ArgoCD under the guidance of senior engineers.

• Oversee the maintenance of the internal Astro website supported by EmDash, including build pipelines, deployments, DNS management, and content publishing assistance.

• Develop and sustain monitoring and alerting systems while minimizing alert noise.

• Manage security and access hygiene tasks, which include patching, enforcing MFA, conducting access reviews, configuring endpoints, and facilitating offboarding.

• Address incoming issues from customer teams by replicating problems, collecting logs and context, resolving procedural issues, and passing on others as necessary.

• Execute deployment and maintenance runbooks in customer environments.

• Track issues until closure and maintain accurate status updates for customers.

• Assist in hardening and compliance initiatives, including developing hardened configurations, control evidence, and infrastructure documentation.

• Expand into responsibilities involving environment builds, configuration changes, and platform ownership.

• Transfer effective practices between customer platforms and internal systems.

• Engage in incident response and contribute to system-focused postmortem analyses.

• Work collaboratively with a fully remote, distributed team using asynchronous communication.

⛳️ Requirements

• 1–3 years of relevant experience in IT support, systems administration, or infrastructure roles.

• Proficiency with Linux and command line operations, including filesystems, permissions, processes, logs, systemd, package management, and SSH.

• Fundamental understanding of networking concepts: DNS, DHCP, HTTP/TLS, VPNs, and firewalls.

• Scripting skills in Python and/or Bash.

• Familiarity with Git and pull request workflows.

• Practical experience with at least one major cloud service provider: AWS, Azure, or GCP.

• Exposure to containerization.

• Experience in administering SaaS tools like Google Workspace or Slack, focusing on user lifecycle and permissions.

• Strong written communication abilities.

• A genuine orientation towards service.

• A willingness to learn and acknowledge areas for improvement.

• U.S. citizenship.

• Eligibility to obtain and maintain a Secret security clearance, including a federal background check.

• Preferred: SQL and relational databases knowledge.

• Preferred: Familiarity with Kubernetes, kubectl, and Helm.

• Preferred: Experience with GitOps tools like ArgoCD or Flux, or CI/CD pipelines.

• Preferred: Knowledge of Infrastructure-as-code tools such as OpenTofu, Terraform, Pulumi, or Ansible.

• Preferred: Understanding of identity and SSO standards, including Keycloak, OIDC, or SAML.

• Preferred: Experience with monitoring and observability tools like Prometheus, Grafana, or OpenTelemetry.

• Preferred: Frontend or static site experience, especially with Astro, or familiarity with headless CMS.

• Preferred: Knowledge of the Python data science ecosystem or experience with JupyterHub.

• Preferred: Security+ certification or equivalent coursework in security fundamentals.

• Preferred: Experience in regulated or government environments, including RMF, NIST 800-53, FedRAMP, or restricted-network deployment.

• Preferred: Contributions to open source projects.
