Substitute Teacher – Special Education

This is a fully remote position, open to applicants in Ohio, +3 more states.

📋 Description

• Provide virtual support for the educational program for students enrolled in Connections Academy schools nationwide.

• Engage in regular consultations with students, Learning Coaches, parents, and school staff.

• Participate in all relevant phases of the IEP process, including data analysis and the delivery and monitoring of IEPs.

• Collaborate with teachers and educational professionals to ensure the effective operation of the special education program, adhering to federal and state regulations.

• Conduct virtual small-group or individual instruction within the LiveLesson online classroom environment.

• Serve as the teacher of record during both short- and long-term absences or vacancies, generally lasting from 2 to 20 weeks, with average assignments being 8 to 12 weeks.

• Communicate with parents, students, and teachers to create and revise individualized learning plans and schedules.

• Provide constructive feedback on student assignments, recommend instructional strategies, oversee assignments, and confirm learning outcomes.

• Complete grading responsibilities, generate progress reports, and facilitate parent conferences.

• Assist in synchronous and asynchronous web conferencing sessions.

• Work alongside teacher teams to promote student progress within the program.

• Manage student cases, draft and implement IEPs, and deliver direct services as specified by the school.

• Collaborate with general education teachers to ensure IEP goals, accommodations, and FAPE requirements are fulfilled.

• Assist students and parents with alternative instructional strategies and daily assignments/projects.

• Maintain up-to-date student records and data, including cumulative files, attendance, and logs.

• Check email during non-assignment times for updates on upcoming tasks and Substitute Services.

• Meet at least once a month with an assigned Substitute Services supervisor via video conferencing.

• Complete necessary professional development and retain active certifications.

⛳️ Requirements

• Must be highly qualified and possess a valid, active full state teaching certification in special education.

• Experience in special education instruction is preferred.

• Multiple state certifications are an advantage.

• Ability to acquire certification in additional states upon request.

• Ability to obtain further clearances as needed.

• A bachelor’s degree or higher is required.

• Maintain a dedicated, distraction-free home office where all business activities will take place.

• Availability from Monday to Friday during assigned school hours, typically from 8:00 am to 4:00 pm in the school’s time zone, while on assignment.

• Strong written and verbal communication skills.

• Capability to write and oversee IEP plans and a willingness to learn various software tools.

• Ability to thrive in a fast-paced environment that demands flexibility, prioritization, self-direction, and creativity.

• Familiarity with IEP/504 plans and their virtual implementation.

• Exceptional attention to detail along with robust time management and organizational skills.

• Proven dedication to student success.

• Strong technical skills; familiarity with learning management systems, Microsoft Office, and Google Apps is preferred.

• Reliable, high-speed internet connection is essential.

• A computer equipped with Microsoft OS and Microsoft Office is required; a PC is preferred.

• A customer-focused mindset and a history of being a team player.

• Must not provide care for others during regular school hours while on assignment.

• Must not hold another job during regular school hours while on assignment.

• Required to complete orientation and training programs within 30 days of hire and at the start of each school year.

• Must complete two-step authentication setup if offered a position.

• A $2,000 sign-on bonus for eligible new hires, distributed in equal payments in December 2026 and June 2027.

• No benefits are offered as this is a part-time position.
