Substation Protection & Controls Engineer

This is a fully remote position, open to applicants in Illinois.

📋 Description

• Develop and revise project design documents and drawings, which include substation one-lines, three-lines, control schematics, wiring diagrams, relay panel configurations, specifications, conduit and cable sizing/routing, along with bills of materials.

• Design auxiliary AC and DC power systems.

• Create SCADA systems and communications interfaces.

• Integrate protection, control, automation, and monitoring systems across various project teams.

• Conduct relay burden, voltage drop, short-circuit, battery sizing, and auxiliary AC/DC load calculations.

• Execute relay coordination studies and prepare corresponding relay settings.

• Collaborate with project managers, clients, engineers, designers, and drafters on project activities.

• Organize and deliver materials to project locations.

• Independently execute site walk-downs to assess project requirements when necessary.

• Assist in creating project cost estimates for substation protection and control upgrade initiatives.

• Offer mentorship to entry-level electrical engineers.

• Function as part of a team of seasoned electrical engineers.

⛳️ Requirements

• A Bachelor's degree from an ABET-accredited institution in Electrical Engineering.

• At least 2 years of experience in relay protection and control design for high-voltage substations ranging from 12 to 500 kV.

• Strong comprehension of the lifecycle of utility-level substation projects.

• Exceptional technical communication skills.

• Detail-oriented work habits.

• Engineer in Training (EIT) designation is preferred but not mandatory.

• Completion of the Culture Index assessment is required.

• Capability to work remotely from home Monday through Friday.
