
Substation Project Engineer – AI & Automation

This is a fully remote position, open to applicants in United States.
• Collaborate with substation engineers and AI/automation teams to create co-engineering solutions for substations.
• Formulate project strategies while ensuring adherence to effective engineering practices.
• Utilize AI to expedite substation engineering tasks, enhancing efficiency.
• Implement design projects for substation physical and protection and control systems.
• Conduct quality control assessments on design projects.
• Interpret and design various substation drawings, including one-line, three-line, schematic, wiring, plan-section, conduit, and grounding diagrams.
• Generate and verify bills of materials.
• Create and review project estimates and timelines.
• Offer lifecycle support for projects, from scoping to final design and implementation.
• Apply client standards in design processes.
• Collaborate with designers and drafters to produce necessary project drawings.
• Provide support during construction phases.
• Occasionally participate in customer site visits.
• Ensure compliance with project scope, schedule, budget, quality control, and safety practices.
• Work alongside engineers, designers, and CAD technicians within the design team.
• Candidates must reside in the United States; being in the Central Time Zone is preferred.
• A Bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering or a related field is required.
• A minimum of four (4) years of relevant substation design experience is necessary.
• Experience in executing both substation physical and protection and control (P&C) projects is essential.
• Ability to articulate the rationale behind specific project design approaches.
• Exceptional communication skills with the ability to engage with internal substation and software teams, clients, engineers, designers, and CAD technicians.
• Capability to conduct quality control checks on substation physical and P&C design projects.
• Proficient in reading and designing one-line drawings, three-line drawings, schematics, wiring, plan-section drawings, conduit, and grounding drawings.
• Skills in creating and verifying bills of materials, estimates, and schedules.
• Familiarity with client standards and their application in designs.
• Ability to meet deadlines while managing pressure effectively.
• Capacity to work autonomously and collaboratively in a team setting.
• Strong engineering judgment with the ability to articulate engineering reasoning.
• Excellent analytical and problem-solving capabilities.
• Engineer Intern (EI/EIT) certification is preferred.
• Professional Engineer (PE) License is preferred.
• Working knowledge of protection and control design is preferred.
• Experience with bus calculations, relay settings, grounding studies, lightning protection and lighting studies, AC and DC calculations, WinIGS or CDEGS, CAD tools, and field testing/commissioning is preferred.
• A Master’s degree in a related field is preferred.
