Substation Engineering Lead

This is a fully remote position, open to applicants in Alabama.

📋 Description

• Oversee and direct multiple substation projects from the planning phase through construction and commissioning.

• Provide technical guidance, project management, and client interaction for electric utility substation projects.

• Execute quality assurance and quality control assessments throughout the project lifecycle.

• Ensure timely project delivery within budget constraints, adhering to technical, regulatory, and safety standards.

• Create project scopes, timelines, budgets, and engineering cost estimates.

• Conduct comprehensive planning studies and assessments related to substation capacity, reliability, and system performance.

• Develop, review, and authorize complete substation designs, encompassing physical layouts, electrical design, grounding systems, equipment selection, bus configurations, structural steel, protection and control systems, relay schematics, wiring diagrams, SCADA integration, and bills of material.

• Produce complete construction drawings (IFC) and bid packages (IFB).

• Draft equipment specifications, material specifications, and construction requirements.

• Professionally seal designs for construction related to substations, protection and controls, and grounding systems.

• Utilize industry-standard software for substation design, planning, modeling, and analysis.

• Assist with permitting, regulatory compliance, and engineering documentation efforts.

• Establish substation protection and control settings.

• Maintain relationships with clients, contractors, utility personnel, and internal teams.

• Act as a technical advisor to utility clients.

• Provide field engineering support during construction, commissioning, outage restoration, and emergency response.

• Aid clients in addressing engineering inquiries, operational challenges, strategic planning, regulatory reporting, and compliance requirements.

• Mentor, train, and develop engineers and technical staff.

• Build a high-performing Power Engineering team.

• Contribute to business development, recruitment, onboarding, and professional development initiatives.

• Implement process enhancements to improve engineering efficiency, accuracy, and client satisfaction.

⛳️ Requirements

• A Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering (BSEE) or Electrical Engineering Technology (BSEET) from an ABET-accredited institution, preferably with a focus on Power Systems.

• An active Professional Engineer (PE) license.

• Capability to obtain licensure in other states through reciprocity in a timely manner.

• At least 10 years of experience in electric utility substation design and engineering.

• Minimum of 2 years in an engineering leadership role with direct supervisory duties.

• Proven success collaborating with utility personnel, construction contractors, and multidisciplinary project teams.

• Extensive knowledge of substation design, protection and controls, grounding systems, SCADA integration, and utility construction practices.

• Solid understanding of NESC, IEEE, ANSI, and RUS regulations.

• Familiarity with OSHA standards relevant to substations and the electric utility sector.

• Broad knowledge of electric utility operations, including transmission, substations, distribution systems, protection and control systems, SCADA, AMI, and OMS platforms.

• Willingness and ability to conduct fieldwork, including traversing uneven or rough terrain, visiting active construction sites, and working in various weather conditions.

• Excellent written and verbal communication skills, capable of conveying technical concepts to both technical and non-technical audiences.

• Ability to cultivate and sustain effective working relationships with clients, contractors, utility personnel, regulatory agencies, and internal team members.

• Strong problem-solving abilities, sound engineering judgment, and attention to detail.

• A valid driver's license with a satisfactory driving record.

• Authorized to work in the United States.

• Must successfully pass background checks, driving record assessments, drug screenings, and client-specific screening processes as required.
