This is a fully remote position, open to applicants in United States.
• Create and implement communication strategies that promote the clean energy transition within the built environment.
• Act as a strategic communications collaborator for RMI’s Buildings team, working alongside the Electricity team and international colleagues.
• Formulate project-specific communication strategies, audience engagement tactics, narratives, and execution guidelines across various communication channels.
• Identify target audiences, key messaging, desired outcomes, and overarching channel strategies.
• Discover communication opportunities that enhance influence, impact, stakeholder engagement, thought leadership, fundraising, and program effectiveness.
• Convert technical analysis, research, and programmatic efforts into narratives tailored for specific audiences.
• Recognize stakeholders, influence pathways, communication prospects, trends, and external developments.
• Provide guidance to project teams on communication strategies, timelines, publication plans, external moments, and news cycles.
• Create communication plans that direct account team execution across media, digital platforms, editorial content, design, events, and other communication functions.
• Coordinate teams to ensure successful execution and delivery.
• Offer advice on communication during concept notes, proposals, project development, fundraising, and business development processes.
• Align communication objectives and KPIs with project goals, monitoring their performance.
• Utilize data and audience feedback to enhance communication strategies and contribute to impact reporting.
• Establish strategic direction for account teams and promote collaboration across communication disciplines.
• Identify thought leadership opportunities and assist with articles, op-eds, speaking materials, messaging frameworks, and other deliverables.
• Elevate visibility and position program experts in external discussions, events, and media opportunities.
• Over 5 years of experience in strategic communications, public affairs, public relations, journalism, marketing, nonprofit communications, or a related area.
• Proven track record in developing communication strategies for projects, campaigns, initiatives, or policy efforts.
• Strong capability to simplify complex technical subjects into audience-focused communication strategies.
• Experience advising internal stakeholders and managing communication projects from conception to execution.
• Exceptional writing, editing, and verbal communication skills.
• Excellent project management and organizational abilities.
• Ability to collaborate effectively across multidisciplinary teams and stakeholder groups.
• Experience leveraging communication metrics and audience insights to guide decision-making.
• Strong judgment, initiative, and problem-solving skills.
• Commitment to RMI's mission and an interest in climate, energy, sustainability, public policy, or related fields.
• Current, independent authorization to work in the U.S. without any present or future sponsorship from RMI.
• Preferred: experience in supporting policy, advocacy, stakeholder engagement, or thought leadership initiatives.
• Preferred: understanding of the buildings and clean energy ecosystem, including transmission grid challenges and dynamics related to electric utilities.
• Preferred: global communication experience and familiarity with energy transition issues.
• Preferred: background in climate, energy, sustainability, economic development, consulting, journalism, or nonprofit sectors.
• Preferred: knowledge of earned media, executive communications, digital communication, and integrated campaigns.
• Preferred: experience contributing to fundraising, proposal development, or business development activities.
• Preferred: experience in matrixed or highly collaborative organizational settings.
