This is a fully remote position, open to applicants in California.
• Lead direct advocacy efforts and foster relationships with members and staff within the California State Legislature, the Governor’s Office, and pertinent executive state agencies.
• Build partnerships with local elected officials, county boards of supervisors, and municipal agencies, concentrating on Solano, Yolo, and Napa counties, to facilitate service expansion.
• Assess the political environment, pinpoint regulatory risks, establish stakeholder engagement priorities, and provide guidance to leadership on operating safely and sustainably throughout California.
• Convert state legislative updates into actionable insights for the Legal, Communications, Product, and Operations teams.
• Oversee internal briefing schedules and prepare strategically for legislative hearings.
• Represent Waymo at external industry forums, coalition meetings, and Capitol events.
• 7–10 years of professional experience in public policy, government relations, legislative advocacy, or regulatory affairs within California.
• Proven record of direct engagement in Sacramento, including lobbying, relationship-building, and negotiating policy outcomes with the California Legislature, the Governor's Office, and state agencies.
• Proficient in navigating local governments, particularly city councils, county supervisors, and local government dynamics in Northern California, especially in or near Solano, Yolo, and Napa counties.
• Strategic problem-solving capabilities in public policy, including managing high-stakes political environments, analyzing complex legislation, and protecting commercial operational freedom.
• Outstanding cross-functional teamwork and organizational skills, including handling fast-paced priorities, delivering structured internal communications, and aligning diverse internal stakeholders.
• Expertise in tech policy and transportation policy, with knowledge of the California DMV, CPUC, and Caltrans.
• Established bipartisan network within the Capitol, covering leadership offices, relevant policy committees, and regional government associations.
• Experience with high-profile public campaigns or coalitions, especially in forming alliances with business and community organizations.
• Experience in providing public testimony and participating in hearings.
• Advanced degree in Law (J.D.), Public Policy (MPP), Political Science, or a related field, or equivalent practical experience in managing high-impact legislative campaigns in California (preferred).
