Staff Software Engineer – Services Platform

This is a fully remote position, open to applicants in United States, +4 more locations.

📋 Description

• Define and construct the platform utilized by Mercury engineers for deploying, managing, and enhancing services.

• Take ownership of the strategy for Mercury’s service ecosystem, which encompasses identity, authentication, discovery, and communication.

• Collaborate with product stakeholders and Release Engineering to establish a streamlined deployment path featuring defaults for rollouts, rollbacks, configuration, secrets, and operational safety.

• Advance Mercury’s service runtime architecture, including Kubernetes, while ensuring the stability of existing services throughout the transition.

• Enable self-service observability for product engineers.

• Partner with Release Engineering, Security, and product engineering teams to develop infrastructure that complies with financial regulations.

• Identify significant gaps and implement practical improvements.

• Establish patterns that allow for the integration of more services without significantly increasing operational complexity.

• Mentor engineers and influence infrastructure thinking beyond systems directly under your ownership.

⛳️ Requirements

• Extensive experience operating Kubernetes in a production environment.

• Strong intuition regarding deployment architecture, potential failure modes, and migrations.

• Experience in designing or significantly owning service-to-service authentication, workload identity, service discovery, service mesh, or similar distributed-systems infrastructure.

• Proven experience in developing self-service observability or operational tools for application engineers.

• Strong judgment in platform design, including the ability to discern when not to build a solution.

• A product-oriented mindset for internal platforms, focusing on adoption, ergonomics, defaults, documentation, and escape routes.

• Capability to align teams with varying goals and perspectives.

• Proficient in communicating technical trade-offs effectively.

• Experience operating at the intersection of deep technical work and broad organizational influence.

• Experience in creating an internal developer platform or service infrastructure within a large engineering organization is advantageous.
