Staff Software Engineer, Query Engine – Rust

This is a fully remote position, open to applicants in United States.

📋 Description

• Design, develop, and enhance Burrow’s distributed query execution, indexing, and storage components.

• Create query APIs, semantic layers, and serving patterns tailored for AI applications and agents.

• Construct high-performance data processing and serving systems for extensive healthcare datasets utilizing Rust, SQL, Python, DuckDB, or Spark.

• Broaden Burrow’s capabilities to accommodate provider data and new query types.

• Collaborate with upstream data engineering, product, platform, data science, quality assurance, application, and Labs@Komodo teams.

• Spearhead complex, multi-quarter projects, balancing trade-offs among performance, scalability, cost, reliability, and delivery.

• Execute data quality checks, validation, observability, lineage, monitoring, and alerting processes.

• Enhance engine latency, throughput, query cost, reliability, failure management, and operational readiness.

• Oversee the transition of legacy query workloads to Burrow without disrupting customer experience.

• Guide engineers and elevate standards for system design, code quality, testing, CI/CD, documentation, and AI-enhanced workflows.

⛳️ Requirements

• Proficiency in writing high-performance systems code in Rust, Erlang, or C++.

• Complete ownership of services, encompassing production operations.

• Comprehensive understanding of analytical engine internals, including Parquet, Arrow, indexing, pruning, compression, compaction, query planning, and execution.

• Experience in building or extending platforms such as Pinot, Druid, ClickHouse, DuckDB, DataFusion, or Trino.

• Capability to design data models, serving patterns, platform components, and architectures for intricate, high-volume data environments.

• Proven track record of establishing technical direction across teams and influencing multi-quarter architectural decisions.

• Background in developing query or serving infrastructure utilized by AI/ML systems, LLM-driven products, or handling high-volume real-time traffic.

• Experience in profiling and optimizing distributed systems concerning memory, CPU, I/O, NVMe, caching, partitioning, and failure management.

• Ability to articulate technical decisions and trade-offs effectively to both technical and senior stakeholders.

• Practical experience with AI tools such as ChatGPT, Gemini, Cursor, or Claude.

• Familiarity with healthcare data, warehouse migrations, high-scale data architecture, applied AI workflows, and rapid execution in fast-growth environments is beneficial.
