Staff Software Engineer, PostgreSQL

This is a fully remote position, open to applicants in United States.

📋 Description

• Oversee the design and architecture for intricate projects and systems within the Datastore.

• Evaluate implementation trade-offs using engineering principles and data-driven insights.

• Collaborate with product managers, scientific and clinical stakeholders, development teams, and support teams.

• Convert requirements into integrations, services, and solutions aimed at scaling Beacon's data platform.

• Contribute to overall product and technical decision-making processes.

• Diagnose and analyze ambiguous issues across system boundaries.

• Enhance code structure, test coverage, and development tooling.

• Develop features with a strong emphasis on data integrity, sound design, and maintainability.

• Compose RFCs and spearhead complex feature discovery and technical design stages.

• Organize individual and team tasks while balancing speed, generalizability, and technical debt.

• Mentor engineers and provide constructive feedback.

• Serve as a technical lead or coordination point for engineering practices.

• Enhance Datastore's operational stability and usability through documentation, tools, and dashboards.

⛳️ Requirements

• Over 7 years of experience in backend development.

• A minimum of 3 years focused on data platforms and backend infrastructure for data-centric applications.

• Highly skilled in at least one of the following: data modeling, distributed systems, API design, or database engineering.

• Strong command of SQL and demonstrable production experience with PostgreSQL as an application database.

• Proficient in writing and optimizing complex SQL queries and understanding schema design, indexes, and query plans.

• Practical experience with data streaming and event processing using Kafka or similar technologies such as RabbitMQ, Pulsar, or Amazon Kinesis.

• Proficient in Julia or Python; familiarity with Julia is a significant advantage but not mandatory.

• Experience in deploying and managing services within containerized environments.

• Knowledge of Kubernetes and Infrastructure as Code tools like Terraform and/or Helm.

• Proven history of mentoring engineers and enhancing team practices, tooling, test coverage, or documentation.

• Exceptional written and verbal communication abilities.

• Self-motivated and adept at thriving in hybrid or fully remote teams.

• Familiarity with, or interest in, LLM-assisted or agentic coding tools in a production environment.

• For Datastore Systems: Experience with GraphQL and TypeScript/JavaScript (Node.js); expertise in end-to-end event-driven pipeline design; complex systems design.

• For PostgreSQL & Data Modeling: Knowledge of PostgreSQL query planner, index selection, EXPLAIN (ANALYZE), data modeling, schema evolution under load, zero-downtime migrations, dual-write transitions, lock avoidance, backfill and verification, production PostgreSQL operations, upgrades, replication, backup and restore, connection pooling, bloat and vacuum behavior, and extensions.
