Staff Software Engineer, Orders Platform

This is a fully remote position, open to applicants in California, +18 more states.

📋 Description

• Oversee multi-team projects aimed at enhancing the reliability, scalability, and accuracy of the Orders platform across checkout, payments, fulfillment, post-order workflows, and partner integrations.

• Establish and lead the technical strategy for the order lifecycle, encompassing order state machines, guarantees, and service contracts.

• Design and advance event-driven, idempotent workflows for order creation, modifications, cancellations, substitutions, payments, and refunds.

• Ensure the presence of clear invariants, observability, and auditable histories throughout services.

• Collaborate with Engineering, Payments, Fulfillment, Catalog, Ads, Fraud and Identity, Data, Infrastructure, Product, and various business teams.

• Update the platform with consistency models, multi-tenant abstractions, failure isolation, and secure integrations.

• Create capabilities that support agentic commerce, policy-driven workflows, secure APIs, and AI system tools.

• Conduct design reviews, mentor engineers, contribute directly to essential code paths, and steer technical decisions during launches and cross-team initiatives.


⛳️ Requirements

• Over 10 years of experience in designing, developing, and managing large-scale backend or platform systems in a production environment.

• Demonstrated ability to lead intricate cross-functional technical initiatives from inception to completion, including architecture, implementation, rollout, and ongoing operations.

• Solid understanding of distributed systems, service-oriented architectures, and high-volume APIs.

• Practical experience with event-driven patterns and idempotent workflows.

• Proficient in one or more backend programming languages such as Go, Java, or Python.

• Experience with both relational and NoSQL data storage solutions.

• Background in managing mission-critical services, including on-call responsibilities, service-level objectives or error budgets, performance tuning, incident management, and post-incident evaluations.

• Proven experience utilizing AI-assisted development tools.

• Excellent communication skills and a history of collaborating with senior engineers, Product teams, and cross-functional stakeholders.

• Preferred: Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or a related technical field, or equivalent practical experience.

• Preferred experience includes payments, orders, logistics, transactional platforms, Kafka or Pub/Sub, asynchronous workflows, multi-tenant platforms, observability, reliability engineering, secure-by-default service design, and AI/agentic patterns.
