Staff Software Engineer – Native Infrastructure

This is a fully remote position, open to applicants in Australia.

📋 Description

• Take ownership of the roadmap for Bazel build rules, React Native bundling, and code generation.

• Make informed trade-offs between immediate fixes and sustainable build foundations.

• Enhance Canva's mobile release and deployment tools, including over-the-air updates and staged rollouts.

• Lead the gradual transition of mobile repositories into Canva's monorepo.

• Ensure continuity in build, testing, and release processes during the monorepo migration.

• Establish a quality-gating strategy throughout the CI/CD pipeline.

• Proactively identify and address issues related to build reliability and speed.

• Advance the React Native build pipeline as a unified foundation for both web and mobile.

• Coordinate efforts among Mobile Workflows, Cross Platform, Build Platform, and Developer Experience stakeholders.

• Develop monitoring and health indicators for builds and releases.

• Mentor engineers and set enduring engineering standards.

• Outline the technical vision for iOS and Android build systems, the monorepo strategy, and React Native build pipelines.

⛳️ Requirements

• Extensive, hands-on experience with Bazel, Gradle, or Xcode build systems at a production level.

• Proven history of defining and executing complex multi-team projects, including migrations, monorepo consolidation, or large-scale build infrastructure.

• Strong background in native engineering for iOS, Android, or both platforms.

• Experience in managing CI/CD or release pipelines that are critical to other teams.

• Capability to balance immediate project delivery with long-term architectural goals.

• Ability to relate changes in external tooling to shifts in technical direction.

• Documentation and technical practices recognized as engineering references.

• Expertise in Bazel build rules, custom rule sets, and monorepo build configurations at a significant scale.

• Familiarity with CI/CD quality gates and pipeline stages.

• Knowledge of React Native bundling, code generation, and native module integration.

• Proficient in Xcode build systems and native iOS release configurations.

• Skilled in Gradle and native Android release configurations.

• Experience with over-the-air updates, staged rollouts, and mobile deployment infrastructure.

• Background in migrating to or working within a large-scale monorepo.
