Staff Software Engineer, Full Stack Developer – Cabin Experience

This is a fully remote position, open to applicants in United States.

📋 Description

• Take charge of the design, implementation, and reliability of the Cabin UX application from start to finish: server-rendered UI utilizing HTMX, the NestJS services supporting it, and the cloud APIs it relies on.

• Develop interfaces for riders on embedded/tablet displays, accommodating varying light and motion conditions, as well as riders of all abilities.

• Implement real-time WebRTC communication between the cabin and operators, encompassing audio/video capture, signaling, and effective handling of poor link conditions.

• Integrate audio and ambient experience systems, which include announcements, sound design, and multi-channel playback.

• Utilize vehicle telemetry and fleet state through WebSockets, SSE, or message buses and visualize it in real-time.

• Create offline-first and low-connectivity functionalities with local state management, queued actions, and safe defaults.

• Deploy and update software on on-vehicle edge computing using the Compute Platform.

• Conduct testing on actual hardware and within hardware-in-the-loop and simulation environments.

• Design, develop, and enhance schemas for both relational and NoSQL databases.

• Collaborate with the Design team to transform rider-experience concepts into delivered, measurable products.

• Facilitate localization and accessibility across cabin and related rider-facing applications.

• Document best practices, establish sensible default technology stacks, and mentor fellow engineers.

⛳️ Requirements

• Proficient in TypeScript at an expert level for both frontend and backend, alongside expert knowledge of HTML5 and CSS.

• Strong preference for hypermedia-driven architectures (such as HTMX, Hotwire, or similar) over heavy client-side frameworks, with sound judgment on when to utilize rich clients (React, Vue, Svelte) as appropriate tools.

• Proven experience with Node.js backend development, preferably NestJS on Fastify, including modules, dependency injection, guards/interceptors, and server-side templating (Handlebars, EJS, or similar) that drives HTMX partials.

• Experience in streaming server state to the UI using HTMX's SSE or WebSocket extensions, supported by Fastify/NestJS gateways or similar server-push infrastructure.

• Practical WebRTC experience: media capture, signaling, TURN/STUN, and troubleshooting quality issues on unreliable networks.

• Familiarity with WebWorkers and event-driven or message-bus architectures (MQTT, gRPC streams, or similar).

• Experience delivering web-native or embedded UIs on Linux-based or tablet hardware (Electron, Capacitor, kiosk-mode browsers, or equivalent), taking into account display, input, and power constraints.

• Knowledge of Web Audio or native audio pipelines, or a proven ability to learn quickly.

• Skill in defining schemas and working with one or more databases (Postgres, Redis, or similar).

• Comfortable using Linux, containers, and deploying to edge or on-vehicle computing; familiarity with Kubernetes and fleet rollout patterns is an added advantage.

• Familiar with AWS services (EC2, S3, DynamoDB, etc.).

• Strong awareness of accessibility standards (WCAG), internationalization, and design considerations for public-facing, unattended use.

• Able to collaborate across hardware, network, and design teams, and troubleshoot issues that span multiple domains.
