Staff Software Engineer – Experiments Platform

This is a fully remote position, open to applicants in Australia.

📋 Description

• Provide expert technical guidance across backend systems that support Canva's experimentation initiatives.

• Enhance the platform utilized for setting up experiments, targeting users, presenting variants, and measuring results.

• Refine experimentation practices, accelerate signal detection, and provide early alerts when safeguards are at risk.

• Investigate the automation of experimentation analysis through AI technologies.

• Take ownership of critical technical challenges.

• Collaborate with senior leaders at Canva to influence the strategic direction of the platform.

• Work in partnership with teams responsible for building the platform.

• Develop shared experimentation capabilities that are utilized across Canva.

• Engage widely with engineering and data science teams, along with senior technical executives.

• Assist engineers in configuring and launching experiments, support data scientists in analyzing impacts, and aid product teams in making decisions about rollouts, modifications, or discontinuations.

⛳️ Requirements

• Proven experience in developing backend systems or platforms relied upon by other engineers.

• Familiarity with experimentation, A/B testing, feature management, or progressive rollout systems in a substantial engineering context.

• Aptitude for addressing ambiguous engineering challenges, establishing technical direction, and guiding engineers towards successful outcomes.

• Experience in constructing internal platforms or capabilities and promoting their adoption.

• Strong foundation in software engineering principles.

• Proficiency in designing reliable backend and distributed systems.

• Capability to analyze scalability, availability, consistency, and failure modes.

• Knowledge of data engineering, analytics engineering, or large-scale data processing.

• Understanding of experiment assignment, targeting, variants, feature flags, metrics, guardrails, and progressive rollout.

• Strong engineering principles that are applicable across different programming languages.

• Direct experience with experimentation, A/B testing, feature management, or rollout infrastructure is a plus.

• A background that includes software engineering, data science, data engineering, or analytics engineering is advantageous.

• Experience with feature flagging, user targeting, progressive rollout, or automated guardrails is a bonus.

• Statistical intuition and the ability to collaborate closely with data scientists is valuable.

• Openness to engaging in interactive, real-time technical challenges and potentially utilizing AI tools during interviews.
