Staff Software Engineer – Experiments Platform

This is a fully remote position, open to applicants in Australia.

📋 Description

• Offer senior technical guidance across the backend systems that support Canva's experimentation program.

• Enhance the platform utilized for setting up experiments, targeting users, presenting variants, and evaluating results.

• Assist in the development of safer and more user-friendly experimentation capabilities.

• Promote effective experimentation practices, accelerate signal detection, and provide early alerts when issues arise.

• Investigate the automation of experimentation analysis through AI technologies.

• Assume responsibility for major technical challenges.

• Collaborate with senior leaders throughout Canva to influence the future trajectory of the platform.

• Work alongside teams involved in building the platform.

• Aid engineers in configuring and launching experiments.

• Partner with data scientists analyzing experimentation data.

• Collaborate with product teams to utilize insights for decisions on rollouts, modifications, or discontinuations.

• Engage broadly with Canva's engineering and data science communities.

⛳️ Requirements

• Proven experience in developing backend systems or platforms relied upon by other engineers.

• Familiarity with experimentation, A/B testing, feature management, or progressive rollout systems in a large-scale engineering context.

• Ability to tackle ambiguous engineering challenges, establish technical direction, and assist engineers in achieving results.

• Experience in creating internal platforms or capabilities and promoting their adoption.

• Strong foundational knowledge in software engineering.

• Experience in designing dependable backend and distributed systems.

• Understanding of scalability, availability, consistency, and failure modes.

• Familiarity with data engineering, analytics engineering, or large-scale data processing.

• Knowledge of experiment assignment, targeting, variants, feature flags, metrics, guardrails, and progressive rollout.

• Strong engineering principles and the ability to apply them across different programming languages.

• Proficiency in Java is advantageous but not mandatory.

• Nice to have: direct experience with experimentation, A/B testing, feature management, or rollout infrastructure.

• Nice to have: a background that encompasses software engineering, data science, data engineering, or analytics engineering.

• Nice to have: experience with feature flagging, user targeting, progressive rollout, or automated guardrail systems.

• Nice to have: statistical intuition and comfort working with experimentation and statistical analysis.
