Staff Software Engineer – Experiments Platform

This is a fully remote position, open to applicants in Australia.

📋 Description

• Deliver senior technical guidance across the backend systems that support Canva's experimentation initiative.

• Enhance the platform utilized for setting up experiments, targeting users, exposing variants, and measuring results.

• Assist in developing a platform that strengthens experimentation practices, accelerates signal detection, and provides early warnings when issues arise.

• Investigate the automation of experimentation analysis through AI technologies.

• Take ownership of substantial technical challenges and establish the technical direction.

• Collaborate with senior leaders and teams focused on building the experimentation platform.

• Work in partnership with Canva's engineering and data science teams.

• Facilitate shared experimentation capabilities that serve engineers, data scientists, and product teams.

⛳️ Requirements

• Proven experience in developing backend systems or platforms relied upon by other engineers.

• Familiarity with experimentation, A/B testing, feature management, or progressive rollout systems in a large-scale engineering context.

• Skilled in transforming ambiguous engineering challenges into clear technical direction and guiding engineers to successful outcomes.

• Experience in building internal platforms or capabilities and promoting their adoption.

• Strong foundation in software engineering principles.

• Background in designing dependable backend and distributed systems.

• Capability to evaluate scalability, availability, consistency, and failure modes.

• Knowledge of data engineering, analytics engineering, or large-scale data processing.

• Acquainted with experiment assignment, targeting, variants, feature flags, metrics, guardrails, and progressive rollout techniques.

• Solid engineering fundamentals with the ability to adapt them across different programming languages.

• Proficiency in Java is preferred as it's Canva's primary language, but it is not mandatory.

• Experience with direct experimentation, A/B testing, feature management, or rollout infrastructure is advantageous.

• A background that includes software engineering along with data science, data engineering, or analytics engineering is a plus.

• Familiarity with feature flagging, user targeting, progressive rollout, or automated guardrail systems is beneficial.

• Comfort with experimentation and statistical concepts is a valuable asset.
