Staff Software Engineer – Experiments Platform

This is a fully remote position, open to applicants in Australia.

📋 Description

• Deliver expert technical guidance across the backend systems that power Canva's experimentation program.

• Advance the platform utilized for setting up experiments, targeting users, presenting variants, and assessing outcomes.

• Promote effective experimentation methodologies, enhance signal detection, and provide early alerts when issues arise.

• Investigate the potential for automating analysis through AI to facilitate quicker learning and iteration for teams.

• Take ownership of major technical challenges.

• Collaborate with senior leadership throughout Canva.

• Influence the future direction of the platform alongside platform development teams.

• Partner across Canva's engineering and data science divisions.

• Enhance shared experimentation capabilities utilized by engineers, data scientists, and product teams.

⛳️ Requirements

• Proven experience in developing backend systems or platforms that serve other engineers.

• Background in experimentation, A/B testing, feature management, or progressive rollout systems within a large engineering context.

• Capability to tackle ambiguous engineering issues, formulate technical strategies, and guide engineers toward successful outcomes.

• Experience in building internal platforms or capabilities and fostering their adoption.

• Strong foundation in software engineering principles.

• Proficiency in designing dependable backend and distributed systems.

• Ability to analyze scalability, availability, consistency, and failure modes.

• Familiarity with data engineering, analytics engineering, or large-scale data processing.

• Understanding of experiment assignment, targeting, variants, feature flags, metrics, guardrails, and progressive rollout.

• Knowledge of Java is beneficial but not mandatory.

• Direct experience with experimentation, A/B testing, feature management, or rollout infrastructure is advantageous.

• A background that includes software engineering and data science, data engineering, or analytics engineering is a plus.

• Experience with feature flagging, user targeting, progressive rollout, or automated guardrail systems is a plus.

• Comfort with experimentation and statistical analysis is highly valued.
