Staff Software Engineer, Data Platform

This is a fully remote position, open to applicants in United States.

📋 Description

• Design and expand backend data infrastructure, which includes PostgreSQL data models, Kafka-driven event pipelines, and GraphQL APIs.

• Lead the design and architecture of intricate systems within the Datastore.

• Take ownership of pipelines that deliver dataset snapshots to the warehouse.

• Collaborate with platform, application, scientific, clinical, product, and support teams to translate requirements into integrations, services, and solutions.

• Troubleshoot and analyze complex issues across system boundaries.

• Implement features with a strong commitment to data integrity, design quality, and maintainability.

• Prepare RFCs, spearhead technical discovery and design phases, and ensure stakeholder alignment on decisions.

• Strategically plan both individual and team tasks while considering speed, generalizability, and technical debt.

• Teach, mentor, review, and offer constructive feedback to engineers.

• Enhance Datastore's operational reliability and usability through documentation, tools, and dashboards.

• Depending on focus, lead the design of GraphQL/APIs and event pipelines or provide extensive PostgreSQL expertise, schema evolution, and database operations.

⛳️ Requirements

• Over 7 years of experience in backend development.

• A minimum of 3 years dedicated to data platforms and backend infrastructure for data-driven applications.

• Highly skilled in at least one of the following: data modeling, distributed systems, API design, or database engineering.

• Strong command of SQL and hands-on experience with PostgreSQL as an application database.

• Proficiency in writing and optimizing SQL queries and understanding schema design, indexes, and query execution plans.

• Practical experience with data streaming and event processing using Kafka or a similar technology.

• Proficient in Julia or Python; experience with Julia is a significant advantage but not mandatory.

• Experience in deploying and managing services within containerized environments.

• Familiarity with Kubernetes and Infrastructure as Code tools such as Terraform and/or Helm.

• Proven track record of mentoring engineers and enhancing team practices, tooling, test coverage, or documentation.

• Excellent written and verbal communication skills.

• Self-motivated and successful in hybrid or fully remote team environments.

• Experience with or interest in LLM-assisted or agentic coding tools in a production setting.

• For Datastore Systems: proficiency in GraphQL; TypeScript/JavaScript (Node.js); end-to-end event-driven pipeline design; and complex systems design.

• For PostgreSQL & Data Modeling: expertise in PostgreSQL query planner, index selection, EXPLAIN (ANALYZE), schema design, time modeling, zero-downtime migrations, dual-write transitions, lock avoidance, backfill and verification, PostgreSQL operations, upgrades, replication, backup and restore, connection pooling, bloat and vacuum behavior, and extensions.
