Staff Software Engineer, Data Platform

This is a fully remote position, open to applicants in United States.

📋 Description

• Spearhead the design and architecture for intricate projects and systems within the Datastore.

• Convert product, scientific, clinical, development, and support needs into integrations, services, and scalable data-platform solutions.

• Make overarching product and technical decisions for Beacon's data platform.

• Troubleshoot and analyze ambiguous issues across system boundaries, enhancing code structure, test coverage, and tooling.

• Develop features with a strong emphasis on data integrity, design quality, and maintainability.

• Create Request for Comments (RFCs) and oversee complex feature discovery and technical design phases.

• Organize individual and team tasks, balancing speed, generalizability, and technical debt.

• Educate and mentor engineers, offer constructive feedback, and potentially act as the project tech lead.

• Enhance Datastore's operational reliability and usability through documentation, tools, and dashboards.

• Manage pipelines that deliver dataset snapshots to the data warehouse.

• Collaborate with platform, application, scientific, and clinical teams to implement APIs and facilitate clinical-study and digital-health workflows.

• Design and scale PostgreSQL data models, Kafka-driven event pipelines, and GraphQL APIs.

⛳️ Requirements

• Over 7 years of backend development experience.

• A minimum of 3 years dedicated to data platforms and backend infrastructure for data-centric applications.

• Highly skilled in at least one of the following: data modeling, distributed systems, API design, or database engineering.

• Strong command of SQL.

• Production experience utilizing PostgreSQL as an application database.

• Practical knowledge of data streaming and event processing using tools such as Kafka, RabbitMQ, Pulsar, Amazon Kinesis, or similar.

• Proficient in Julia or Python.

• Familiarity with GraphQL and TypeScript/JavaScript (Node.js).

• Experience in deploying and managing services in containerized environments.

• Understanding of Kubernetes and Infrastructure as Code tools like Terraform and/or Helm.

• Proven history of mentoring engineers and enhancing team practices, tooling, test coverage, or documentation.

• Exceptional written and verbal communication skills.

• Self-directed mindset with a track record of thriving in hybrid or fully remote teams.

• Experience with or interest in LLM-assisted or agentic coding tools in production environments.
