Staff Software Engineer – Back End

This is a fully remote position, open to applicants in Virginia.

📋 Description

• Design, develop, and maintain backend services within a microservices architecture utilizing Java 17+, Spring Boot, JPA/Hibernate, and REST APIs.

• Create and implement REST and SOAP services, as well as integrations between modernized and legacy systems.

• Enhance and support the existing enterprise Java platform.

• Analyze, troubleshoot, and resolve intricate software defects and production challenges.

• Develop and optimize SQL queries, data access patterns, and Oracle database connections.

• Work collaboratively with architects and senior engineers on modernization projects, technical design, and implementation strategies.

• Improve systems through comprehensive documentation, refactoring, automated testing, CI/CD, deployments, and engineering quality practices.

• Engage in Agile ceremonies and technical discussions with partners and stakeholders.

• Conduct code reviews, disseminate technical knowledge, and mentor junior and mid-level engineers.

• Strategically plan and execute technical roadmaps and complex engineering tasks with minimal supervision.

• Present technical subjects, trade-offs, risks, costs, and implementation complexities.

• Communicate design decisions and systems overviews for demonstrations, bid proposals, and client-facing activities.

• Participate in technical interviews and assess engineering candidates.

• Occasionally travel to collaborate with and present to clients, partners, and stakeholders.

⛳️ Requirements

• Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, Information Systems, or a related field, accompanied by 10+ years of professional software development experience.

• Relevant professional experience may substitute for formal education.

• Over 8 years of hands-on Java development experience.

• More than 5 years of practical experience with Spring Framework and/or Spring Boot.

• At least 5 years of hands-on experience in developing REST APIs and web services in a microservices framework.

• 5+ years of experience working with Oracle or another relational database.

• Experience in designing, developing, troubleshooting, and supporting production enterprise applications.

• Familiarity with Agile/Scrum development methodologies.

• Proficiency in using Git-based source control.

• Strong analytical, troubleshooting, and problem-solving abilities.

• Excellent verbal and written communication skills, capable of collaborating directly with teammates, partners, and stakeholders in a distributed setting.

• Preferred: experience with Kafka, Redis, resilient integration patterns, legacy J2EE technologies, Docker, Kubernetes, JUnit, Mockito, modernization from monoliths to microservices, concurrent legacy and modern architectures, and regulated environments such as FedRAMP, FISMA, or HIPAA.
