Staff Software Engineer

This is a fully remote position, open to applicants in Portugal.

📋 Description

• Design, construct, and scale the foundational platform infrastructure capable of managing high-volume web traffic at the CDN and edge computing layers.

• Lead the architectural design, technical planning, and creation of long-term design documentation.

• Strategize and implement gradual, systematic rollouts by defining target audiences, key performance indicators (KPIs), and success metrics prior to deploying changes.

• Troubleshoot intricate front-end behavior across various browsers, devices, and geographical locations.

• Collaborate with data engineering teams to ensure scalability in testing and develop measurement and observability frameworks.

• Address complex technical challenges that involve considerable scope and uncertainty.

• Mentor fellow engineers and act as a technical escalation point for intricate platform issues.

• Remain updated on web performance technologies, edge computing methodologies, and browser optimization strategies.

• Incorporate AI coding tools into the engineering processes.

⛳️ Requirements

• 10 years of software engineering expertise, with a robust background in developing and scaling high-traffic, multi-tenant web platforms.

• Expert-level knowledge in TypeScript, JavaScript, and Python.

• Proven experience in designing and operating distributed, high-availability systems at substantial scale.

• Familiarity with cloud platforms such as AWS, GCP, or Azure.

• Experience with CDN infrastructure and web performance optimization tools, including Cloudflare, Lighthouse, WebPageTest, web workers, lazy loading, and code splitting.

• Experience with Infrastructure as Code using Pulumi or a comparable tool.

• Proficient SQL and data querying skills; capable of working with data warehouses.

• Familiarity with message queues like SQS or Kinesis and continuous integration/continuous deployment (CI/CD) pipelines.

• Experience with PostgreSQL, Redshift, or equivalent data storage solutions.

• Strong problem-solving abilities and attention to detail.

• Active engagement with AI engineering tools such as Claude Code, GitHub Copilot, or Codex.

• Excellent English communication skills for technical discussions and asynchronous written collaboration.

• Availability to work full-time hours in Eastern Standard Time.

• Legal authorization to work as an independent contractor in the country of residence.

• Preferred: Experience with Cloudflare Workers or edge computing.

• Preferred: Background in e-commerce platforms such as Shopify, Salesforce Commerce Cloud, or similar.

• Preferred: Experience in Snowflake or data warehouse query optimization.

• Preferred: Background in media or high-traffic publishing platforms.

• Preferred: Experience in managing or leading a multi-brand or multi-tenant web platform.

• Preferred: Previous startup experience with significant ownership of platform responsibilities.

• Preferred: Agile/Scrum experience in a distributed team setting.
