Staff Software Engineer

This is a fully remote position, open to applicants in New York.

📋 Description

• Design, develop, and scale distributed systems using Kotlin, Java, and Spring Boot for a live real-money trading platform.

• Take ownership of and optimize high-throughput Kafka event pipelines, focusing on partition strategy, consumer group design, and ensuring exactly-once processing.

• Create high-throughput, low-latency event-stream systems that maintain data integrity, cache coherence, and achieve sub-millisecond read paths.

• Collaborate with product and engineering leadership on cross-domain technical decisions.

• Diagnose and implement durable solutions for production issues in a live trading environment.

• Identify performance bottlenecks and technical risks proactively before they impact trading operations.

• Elevate engineering standards through the development of design documents, conducting code and architecture reviews, and implementing scalable engineering patterns.

⛳️ Requirements

• 7+ years of experience in building scalable, fault-tolerant distributed systems in production environments.

• Expert-level proficiency in Java or Kotlin along with Spring Boot.

• Strong understanding of REST, gRPC, and Protobuf API design principles.

• Extensive hands-on experience with Kafka, Redpanda, or Pub/Sub technologies.

• Knowledge of Kafka partition strategies, consumer group rebalancing, and delivery guarantees.

• Profound experience with event-driven architecture and asynchronous messaging.

• Proven track record of end-to-end domain ownership of systems.

• Strong skills in performance optimization related to latency, throughput, and data pipeline efficiency.

• Excellent communication skills, characterized by clarity and directness.

• High tolerance for ambiguity and ability to work at speed.

• Preferred: experience with real-time delivery systems such as WebSocket fan-out, server-sent events, or large-scale pub/sub architectures.

• Preferred: familiarity with financial platforms, real-time trading systems, or prediction markets.

• Preferred: experience in a fast-paced startup environment.

• Preferred: knowledge of FIX protocol or exchange connectivity patterns.
