Staff Software Engineer

This is a fully remote position, open to applicants in United States.

📋 Description

• Offer technical guidance for the Range Against the Machine team.

• Develop and sustain reusable virtual machine templates and standardized cyber ranges.

• Establish the technical direction for reusable cyber ranges while balancing realism, security, reliability, scalability, usability, performance, maintainability, customer outcomes, and delivery.

• Enhance Ansible and Packer architecture, standards, and automation processes.

• Design and resolve issues in complex virtual networks, VMware-based infrastructure, Windows Server and Active Directory, Linux systems, identity services, security tools, and relevant ICS/OT environments.

• Identify failures across networks, operating systems, virtualization, images, blueprints, automation, platform services, and security products.

• Create bounded interim solutions to bridge the gaps between range requirements and platform capabilities.

• Collaborate with Product, Platform Engineering, Security, and Staff and Principal Engineers on long-term platform goals.

• Enhance repository practices, review processes, automated build and validation, release management, documentation, runbook, and support-handoff practices.

• Direct technical decisions across teams.

• Establish standards and automation that benefit teams beyond RATM.

• Proactively communicate dependencies and risks.

• Mentor engineers, assign technical ownership, and minimize single-person dependencies.

⛳️ Requirements

• 6–8 years of relevant experience.

• Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science preferred; equivalent combinations of education and experience will be considered.

• Proven experience in designing, building, automating, and maintaining complex infrastructure or cybersecurity environments at a Staff-level scope.

• Advanced skills in enterprise networking and troubleshooting, including routing, switching, segmentation, firewalls, NAT, DNS, DHCP, VPNs, proxies, and multi-hop traffic paths.

• Practical experience with Windows Server and Active Directory, including domain, authentication, authorization, DNS, Group Policy, certificates, and trusts.

• Proficient in Linux administration across various distributions.

• Hands-on experience with Ansible, Packer, VMware vCenter, and at least one additional hypervisor, virtualization platform, or cloud environment.

• Familiarity with integrating enterprise security technologies.

• Solid understanding of offensive and defensive workflows, security telemetry, and ICS/OT architecture and constraints.

• Proficient in Git.

• Experience in enhancing automated validation, testing, security, versioning, and release practices for infrastructure code, configuration, or virtual machine images.

• Capability to lead ambiguous technical initiatives across teams and influence senior technical stakeholders.

• Ability to mentor and delegate responsibilities to engineers.

• Strong communication skills, able to engage with both technical and non-technical audiences.

• Capacity to balance implementation details with product, customer, and business outcomes.

• Equivalent combinations of education, professional experience, certifications, and demonstrated technical achievements will be considered.

• U.S. work authorization is required; proof of eligibility to work in the United States must be provided upon hiring.
