Staff Software Engineer

This is a fully remote position, open to applicants in Utah.

📋 Description

• Direct the technical strategy of a backend engineering team.

• Act as a hands-on technical leader while establishing engineering standards.

• Facilitate architectural discussions and make technical decisions across various services and distributed systems.

• Create frameworks for scalable, secure, reliable, and maintainable systems.

• Guide the evolution of the technology stack as products grow and scale.

• Propel enhancements in performance, reliability, cost efficiency, developer experience, and engineering quality.

• Design and develop production-grade, cloud-native backend services and APIs.

• Create event-driven, service-oriented systems and data pipelines that are resilient to load, retries, and partial failures.

• Develop secure systems for processing, organizing, and displaying large volumes of content, including search, retrieval, and AI functionalities.

• Integrate AI-driven services and cutting-edge technologies.

• Ensure design considerations for security, permissions, governance, compliance, and data protection.

• Equip services with logging, metrics, distributed tracing, and telemetry capabilities.

• Enhance throughput, latency, scalability, and cost-effectiveness.

• Design systems with idempotency, ordering, deduplication, rate limiting, and safe reprocessing in mind.

• Own intricate technical projects from conception to deployment and ongoing operation.

• Assess architectural trade-offs regarding performance, cost, security, scalability, and maintainability.

• Produce technical documentation, architecture diagrams, system designs, and record technical decisions.

• Collaborate with Product, Design, Platform Services, engineering leadership, and other engineering teams.

• Mentor engineers to enhance their technical skills and engineering practices.

• Promote knowledge sharing through code reviews, design discussions, documentation, and hands-on mentorship.

• Investigate and validate emerging technologies through proofs of concept.

• Identify ways to enhance customer experience and engineering efficiency.

• Utilize modern development and AI tools to boost engineering productivity.

⛳️ Requirements

• A Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or a related discipline, or equivalent practical experience.

• Over 8 years of professional software engineering experience in delivering production-grade systems at scale.

• More than 3 years of experience providing technical leadership and influencing engineering practices and direction.

• Extensive experience in designing and managing distributed, cloud-native backend systems, preferably on AWS (including services such as ECS, Lambda, SQS, DynamoDB, and S3).

• Strong background in event-driven and service-oriented architectures, including asynchronous processing, queuing, idempotency, and managing failures and retries.

• Proven capability to build systems that are efficient, reliable, and cost-effective under high volume.

• Proficient backend development experience in a modern backend language; C#/.NET is preferred, but Python, Java, or Go are also valued.

• Experience in implementing observability in production environments: logging, metrics, distributed tracing, and telemetry.

• Working knowledge of modern AI and its applications in production software.

• Familiarity with automated testing, CI/CD practices, and managing production services.

• Experience in developing search, retrieval, or other data-intensive systems at scale is a significant advantage.

• Acquaintance with semantic or vector search, embeddings, and retrieval-augmented generation is a plus.

• Experience in operating high-throughput data or processing pipelines is a differentiator.

• Familiarity with document management, content services, or enterprise systems is advantageous.

• Experience in integrating AI or agent-facing services into production applications is a differentiator.

• Experience in building B2B SaaS in legal or other regulated, security-sensitive environments is a differentiator.

• Contributions to open-source projects, technical writing, or sharing technical expertise are additional differentiators.
