Staff Software Engineer

This is a fully remote position, open to applicants in California.

📋 Description

• Take full ownership of the architecture for Beckett’s team domain from start to finish, covering services, data flows, integrations, and failure modes.

• Create scalable products and services with well-defined boundaries, contracts, data ownership, and migration paths.

• Spearhead modernization initiatives using PHP monolith strangler patterns and transitioning Java to TypeScript service replacements.

• Develop an understanding of related systems such as grading, marketplace, CRM, payments, identity, and data/ETL.

• Set standards for security, testing, observability, and operational excellence.

• Champion the adoption of AI-assisted engineering standards and guidelines throughout the technology organization.

• Identify AI use cases for comprehending legacy code, generating tests, and creating migration scaffolding; assess impact.

• Manage moderate-scope, complex projects that span one to two quarters.

• Coordinate engineers, stakeholders, and dependencies to ensure predictable delivery.

• Strategically plan and prioritize tasks using a value-versus-cost framework.

• Communicate any blockers or delays in a proactive manner.

• Encourage knowledge sharing and documentation among engineers and business stakeholders.

• Build and maintain relationships across the organization.

• Mentor senior and mid-level engineers through design reviews, collaborative work, and constructive feedback.

• Enhance organizational AI fluency through workflows, prompts, agent configurations, and coaching.

⛳️ Requirements

• A minimum of 8 years of professional software engineering experience.

• Proven technical leadership in multi-engineer, multi-quarter projects.

• Expert-level backend engineering skills in TypeScript/Node.js and/or Java.

• Proficiency in TypeScript, Java 21, PHP, Python, and C#.

• Practical production experience with React/Next.js frontends, API and service layers, relational data stores, and infrastructure.

• Demonstrated experience in modernizing legacy systems while under live traffic.

• Extensive knowledge of PostgreSQL and MySQL, including data modeling, migrations, and performance optimization.

• Strong foundation in distributed systems, including REST, GraphQL, gRPC, SQS, idempotency, and failure handling.

• Production AWS expertise in ECS, Lambda, networking, and IAM.

• Proficiency in infrastructure-as-code using AWS CDK and/or Terraform.

• Experience in elevating engineering standards through testing, observability, documentation, and incident response.

• Daily familiarity with AI coding assistants and agentic tools like Claude Code, Copilot, or Cursor.

• Experience integrating AI tools into CI, code review, and documentation workflows.

• Mature judgment regarding AI-generated code verification, security, and limitations.

• Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal, tailored to technical and business audiences.

• Experience with large-scale frontend architecture or React Native/Expo.

• Familiarity with e-commerce, marketplace, payments, or high-traffic consumer platforms.

• Exposure to data platforms or applied machine learning experience.

• Experience in building and responsibly deploying LLM-powered features or platforms.

• Interest in sports cards, gaming, or collectibles.

• Legal eligibility to work in the United States, verified through e-Verify.
