This is a fully remote position, open to applicants in Canada.
• Establish and take charge of the technical strategy for a core product area.
• Make and justify architectural, sequencing, and trade-off decisions.
• Oversee intricate, multi-quarter projects from start to finish.
• Decompose ambiguous challenges into tasks that can be executed by other engineers.
• Collaborate with product and design teams from the definition of problems through to delivery.
• Influence what is developed and the methods used for development.
• Elevate technical standards through design evaluations, code assessments, and mentorship.
• Recognize and advocate for investments in reliability, performance, and developer productivity.
• Take responsibility for operational health, performance, observability, and on-call duties for the domain.
• Utilize AI development tools and assist the team in their effective application.
• Work across the entire stack, including backend data models, asynchronous processing, frontend design systems, and rich visualizations.
• Report directly to the Senior Engineering Manager.
• Over 10 years of experience in building and delivering production software as a full-stack engineer.
• Proven history of technical leadership on complex, high-stakes projects.
• Demonstrated influence beyond the individual’s own team.
• Strong server-side expertise with modern object-oriented programming practices.
• Proficient in Ruby and PostgreSQL, or possess deep knowledge of a similar stack with a desire to learn Affinity's technology stack.
• Experience in creating component-based interfaces using React and TypeScript.
• In-depth knowledge of relational databases.
• Experience in designing scalable systems and identifying performance bottlenecks.
• Practical familiarity with AI-assisted development tools such as Claude Code, Cursor, Copilot, or similar tools.
• Strong judgment regarding the use of AI tools, reviewing generated outputs, and understanding associated risks.
• Capability to deliver high-quality products and advocate for technical excellence.
• Nice to have: experience in developing product features utilizing LLMs or agent frameworks, including evaluation and monitoring.
• Nice to have: background in an organization where AI-assisted development was commonplace.
• During live interviews, the use of AI is prohibited unless otherwise specified.
• Investment in AI fluency and assessment as part of the company’s operational framework.
• Authorization to utilize AI when shaping applications or preparing for interviews.
