Staff Software Engineer – AI, Platform

This is a fully remote position, open to applicants in Canada.

📋 Description

• Assist in defining and implementing technical strategies related to platform architecture, developer experience, and AI-driven engineering.

• Convert engineering goals into actionable roadmaps, architectural decisions, and technical standards.

• Identify technical shortcomings, dependencies, and risks that may impact scalability, reliability, or engineering efficiency.

• Shape architecture across various engineering teams while actively participating in the implementation process.

• Advance engineering methodologies towards an AI-centric development framework.

• Incorporate AI into development, testing, debugging, documentation, and operational processes.

• Design or create internal AI tools, integrations, plugins, and reusable components.

• Investigate and implement agentic workflows and autonomous engineering systems.

• Set standards and guidelines for proper and responsible use of AI.

• Mentor engineers on how to integrate AI into their daily tasks.

• Tackle challenges related to scalability, performance, reliability, and distributed systems.

• Enhance platform capabilities and internal tools utilized by engineering teams.

• Create reusable libraries, frameworks, and infrastructure.

• Explore systemic or high-impact technical challenges and facilitate their resolution.

• Balance the considerations of scalability, security, product demands, and delivery speed in architectural choices.

• Collaborate with engineers through technical assessments, architecture discussions, pair programming, and coaching.

• Introduce methodologies and practices that enhance maintainability, reliability, and development speed.

• Act as a senior technical advisor to engineering leadership.

• Take ownership of ambiguous, cross-functional technical projects from problem identification to implementation.

⛳️ Requirements

• Over 10 years of professional software engineering experience, with substantial expertise in designing and constructing scalable systems.

• Around 6 years of experience working with distributed systems, platform architecture, or similarly complex technical environments.

• Prior experience in roles such as Staff Engineer, Principal Engineer, Technical Lead, or an equivalent level of technical authority.

• Proven track record in designing technical roadmaps and making architectural decisions across multiple systems or engineering teams.

• Strong practical engineering skills.

• Experience with high-traffic or high-scale digital platforms where reliability, performance, and availability are essential.

• Hands-on experience in introducing or scaling AI usage within engineering teams.

• Familiarity with AI-assisted software development and developer tools.

• Knowledge of internal AI tools, integrations, plugins, or engineering utilities.

• Experience with AI-enhanced development, testing, or operational workflows.

• Understanding of agentic architectures and multi-step AI workflows.

• Experience with autonomous or semi-autonomous agents.

• Background in developer productivity and AI adoption initiatives.

• Capability to influence engineers across various teams without relying on direct management authority.

• Strong comprehension of the trade-offs between engineering, product, security, and compliance.

• Experience in platform engineering, developer experience (DX), internal tooling, or shared engineering infrastructure.

• Proven ability to create reusable libraries, frameworks, or tools that enhance engineering productivity and software quality.

• Excellent communication skills and ability to provide clarity to technically ambiguous situations.

• Relevant experience with JavaScript / TypeScript, React, Next.js, Node.js, AWS, distributed and cloud-native architectures, and modern AI development tools and frameworks.

• Comfortable working within a modern JavaScript/TypeScript and cloud-based ecosystem.

• Legally authorized to operate as an independent contractor and issue monthly invoices.
