Staff Software Engineer, AI

This is a fully remote position, open to applicants in Texas.

📋 Description

• Take ownership of the technical vision and architecture for Stord's AI platform.

• Lead the technical strategy alongside engineering and product leadership.

• Assess build versus buy options, tools, and architectural frameworks.

• Set technical quality benchmarks through design assessments, code evaluations, and architectural advice.

• Engage in design evaluations, go/no-go release discussions, sprint planning, and cross-team collaborations.

• Architect and create agent orchestration, tool systems, prompt management, and integration APIs.

• Develop TypeScript services utilizing Hono, Cloudflare Workers, Durable Objects, D1/Drizzle, and Anthropic Claude AI SDK.

• Construct scope-aware tool systems for order management, inventory, and knowledge-base functionalities.

• Design robust integrations with Elixir/Phoenix APIs to ensure fault tolerance and graceful degradation.

• Integrate outputs from ML models through API layers.

• Mentor engineers and help senior engineers evolve into independent technical decision-makers.

• Educate on effective AI coding tools and guided agentic development.

• Develop reusable abstractions, architectural documentation, and tools for developers.

• Proactively identify technical risks and opportunities.

• Collaborate with Product Management on the AI development roadmap.

• Ensure alignment of AI platform architecture with the overarching engineering strategy.

• Work alongside Data Scientists and ML Engineers to define model requirements and integration boundaries.

• Assist product engineering teams in adopting AI functionalities.

• Report directly to the Sr Engineering Manager of the AI team.

⛳️ Requirements

• Proficiency in TypeScript with a minimum of 3 years in a production environment.

• Experience in designing stateful systems at the edge; familiarity with Cloudflare Workers, Durable Objects, or similar edge runtimes is highly preferred.

• Proven track record of building and deploying agentic or LLM-powered features in production.

• Knowledge of prompt engineering, tool/function calling, context management, and AI system reliability.

• Experience with event streaming systems; Redpanda preferred, Kafka acceptable.

• Proficient in designing and consuming RESTful APIs, OpenAPI specifications, and event-driven architectures.

• Strong foundational knowledge in SQL.

• Experience with D1, SQLite, or PostgreSQL databases.

• Hands-on experience with Cloudflare, GCP, or AWS platforms.

• Understanding of serverless and edge deployment models.

• Experience with instrumentation of production systems using OpenTelemetry, Datadog, or similar tools.

• Capability to form, defend, and articulate technical viewpoints.

• Ability to mentor and uplift engineers.

• Competence in using and teaching directed AI-assisted development methodologies.

• Nice-to-have: Experience with Elixir/Phoenix, Cloudflare developer platform, Anthropic Claude, AI SDK, MCP, knowledge of logistics/e-commerce/supply chain, open-source contributions, WebSocket systems, scope-based authorization, and multi-tenant architectures.
