Staff Production Engineer

This is a fully remote position, open to applicants in Australia.

📋 Description

• Take long-term responsibility for a high-stakes technical area such as sharding core data stores, resource utilization, or large-scale distributed systems.

• Develop production software that enhances reliability, efficiency, and resilience.

• Instrument, refactor, and reconstruct components that present challenges at scale.

• Collaborate closely with product and infrastructure teams.

• Partner with, mentor, and gain insights from fellow production engineers.

• Mitigate incidents, speed up recovery, reduce severity, and enhance latency.

• Contribute to shared platform capabilities when recurring patterns are identified.

• Create system-level enhancements that enable other engineers to deliver with greater confidence.

• Foster trusted relationships with embedded teams and guide them towards quicker, lower-effort delivery.

⛳️ Requirements

• Proven experience in managing reliability work within extensive distributed systems.

• Background as an engineer embedded within or closely collaborating with product or feature teams.

• Experience in production environments using Java, Go, Rust, C++, or a similar systems programming language.

• Hands-on experience with sharding, replication, failure modes, and consistency trade-offs.

• Capability to debug unfamiliar large codebases.

• Demonstrated ability to influence without direct authority through technical expertise and trust.

• In-depth knowledge of networking.

• Understanding of Linux internals and kernel-level operations.

• Familiarity with distributed systems patterns, such as consistent hashing, leader election, consensus, backpressure, and circuit breakers.

• Experience with observability tools, tracing, dashboards, alerting, and SLOs.

• Knowledge of production-scale Kubernetes and container orchestration.

• Skills in performance analysis of JVM applications or systems-level processes.

• Significant experience with AWS cloud infrastructure.

• Extensive production on-call and incident response experience.

• Background in enterprise SaaS, JVM internals, multi-region or sharding experience, and familiarity with eBPF or kernel instrumentation is a plus.
