This is a fully remote position, open to applicants in Australia.
• Lead the Core team, one of the two teams within Production Engineering.
• Guide software engineers who are responsible for Production Engineering's services and address broader engineering challenges across teams.
• Transform intricate or vaguely defined issues into targeted engineering objectives and ensure their delivery.
• Remain actively involved in technical tasks to question assumptions, grasp trade-offs, and facilitate informed engineering decisions.
• Define the team's upcoming phase, focus areas, priorities, and future challenges.
• Structure initiatives and establish measurement criteria.
• Convert insights gained from individual tasks into widely applicable engineering capabilities.
• Establish clear priorities, mentor engineers, foster psychological safety, and enhance team fluency and influence.
• Assist in developing reliable services at scale, reusable engineering standards, Core–Embedded feedback mechanisms, and deepen engineering expertise.
• Contribute to Canva's reliability, efficiency, and predictability as complexity increases.
• Proven experience in leading software engineers through complex or unclear technical challenges.
• Background in software environments where reliability, scalability, and production risks are paramount.
• Demonstrated experience in guiding significant technical initiatives from problem identification to delivery across various teams.
• Experience in assisting teams to adopt new tools, methodologies, or operational approaches.
• Strong ability to articulate technical trade-offs, set a strategic direction without dictating every decision, and foster an environment where engineers feel free to question ideas.
• Solid understanding of computer science principles, including concurrency, multithreading, and data structures.
• Proficiency in programming languages such as Go, Python, Java, or C++.
• Extensive knowledge of system internals, networking, and cloud services like AWS or GCP.
• Ability to navigate ambiguous problems that involve multiple components and constraints.
• Familiarity with observability, capacity considerations, failure modes, and operational characteristics of production systems.
• Experience in large-scale or high-stakes environments.
• Previous management experience in SRE/Production Engineering is preferred.
• Experience with large-scale storage, CDN, networking, or distributed infrastructure is preferred.
• A track record of developing technical leaders is preferred.
• Experience in shaping the scope, operational methodologies, or identity of a developing technical team is preferred.
