Senior Production Engineering Manager

This is a fully remote position, open to applicants in Australia.

📋 Description

• Lead the Embedded team, one of the two teams within Production Engineering

• Address critical production challenges such as data protection, secure software modifications, platform reliability and observability, and resilience against overload scenarios

• Influence engineering leaders and collaborate with teams beyond your direct reporting line

• Assist engineers in navigating various technical and organizational contexts

• Question assumptions and contribute to shaping significant technical decisions

• Determine the problems the team will tackle, how engagements will function, success metrics, and impact assessment

• Establish direction, foster psychological safety, provide direct coaching, and enhance the technical and organizational influence of senior engineers

• Concentrate on high-impact production issues within Embedded and ensure measurable outcomes

• Create a scalable engagement model that maintains technical excellence, coaching quality, and robust partnerships

• Transform engagement insights into reusable engineering practices, methodologies, and capabilities

• Cultivate senior engineers and engagement leads into future technical leaders

• Collaborate with Canva's Reliability Platform subgroup and the broader Infra supergroup

⛳️ Requirements

• Proven experience in leading highly skilled software engineers and technical leads through complex or unclear tasks

• Background in software environments where reliability, scalability, and production risk are paramount

• Experience in building trust and influencing others without direct reporting authority

• Track record of leading substantial technical initiatives that span multiple teams or groups

• Proficiency in persuading teams to adjust their software development or operational practices

• Capability to convey complex technical trade-offs to senior stakeholders effectively

• Strong foundation in computer science principles, including concurrency, multithreading, and data structures

• Expertise in programming languages such as Go, Python, Java, or C++

• Solid understanding of system internals, networking, and cloud platforms like AWS or GCP

• Comfortable analyzing ambiguous, cross-component system issues

• Familiarity with observability, capacity planning, failure modes, and operational characteristics of production systems

• Experience in large-scale or high-criticality environments

• Nice to have: previous experience leading Site Reliability Engineering, Production Engineering, or a similar function

• Nice to have: experience with large-scale storage solutions, CDN, networking, or distributed infrastructure

• Nice to have: history of mentoring senior engineers and technical leads

• Nice to have: experience in defining the identity, operational model, or scope of a technical function
