Principal Production Engineer

This is a fully remote position, open to applicants in Australia.

📋 Description

• Establish the Production Engineering engagement framework with product and infrastructure teams.

• Oversee the most technically intricate engagements that involve sharding, multi-region architecture, and JVM performance at scale.

• Set the technical benchmarks and standards for Production Engineering at Canva.

• Identify pairing strategies and learning objectives for staff and mid-level engineers.

• Enhance the Production Engineering capabilities throughout the organization.

• Align Production Engineering activities with Canva’s product roadmap and production-readiness initiatives.

• Define and monitor reliability metrics, including incident severity, duration, and successful feature launches.

• Collaborate closely with product and infrastructure teams to boost reliability, efficiency, resilience, shipping confidence, and minimize toil.

• Develop the practice and adjust hiring, engagements, and team standards at the Principal level.

⛳️ Requirements

• Proven experience in owning reliability for large-scale distributed systems.

• Experience in leading or shaping technical functions where engineers collaborate across team boundaries.

• Hands-on coding experience at a senior level.

• Ability to influence technical decisions across the organization.

• Production-scale experience with programming languages such as Java, Go, Rust, C++, or similar systems languages.

• Experience in production environments involving sharding, replication, failure modes, and consistency trade-offs.

• Understanding of Linux internals, including process scheduling, memory management, I/O, and network stack.

• Familiarity with distributed systems concepts such as consistent hashing, leader election, consensus, backpressure, and circuit breakers.

• Experience with observability tools, including tracing, dashboards, and alerting mechanisms.

• Practical experience with Kubernetes at the scheduler level.

• Experience profiling JVM applications or systems-level processes.

• Hands-on experience with AWS in a production setting.

• Experience with on-call duties and incident response.

• Background in Enterprise SaaS, knowledge of JVM internals, and experience with multi-region setups or sharding are considered advantageous.
