Principal Production Engineer

This is a fully remote position, open to applicants in Australia.

📋 Description

• Establish the Production Engineering engagement model in collaboration with product and infrastructure teams

• Oversee the most technically challenging engagements, including sharding, multi-region architecture, and JVM performance at scale

• Set the technical standards and expectations for Production Engineering at Canva

• Develop pairing strategies for both staff and mid-level engineers

• Enhance the Production Engineering capabilities throughout the organization

• Align Production Engineering with the product roadmap and affect production readiness

• Define and monitor reliability metrics, such as incident severity, duration, and successful feature launches

• Collaborate closely with product and infrastructure teams to boost software reliability, efficiency, and resilience

• Develop software that alters production behavior

• Cultivate trusted relationships with embedded teams, assisting them in delivering with greater confidence and reduced effort

⛳️ Requirements

• Proven experience managing reliability in large-scale distributed systems

• Background in leading or shaping technical functions where engineers collaborate across team boundaries

• Substantial hands-on software engineering experience at a senior level

• History of influencing technical decisions across organizations

• Production-scale proficiency with Java, Go, Rust, C++, or a similar systems programming language

• Practical experience in distributed systems, covering sharding, replication, failure modes, consistency trade-offs, consistent hashing, leader election, consensus, backpressure, and circuit breakers

• Knowledge of Linux internals, including process scheduling, memory management, I/O, and the network stack

• Familiarity with observability tools, including tracing, dashboards, and alerting systems

• Experience with Kubernetes at the scheduler level in production environments

• Skills in performance analysis and profiling of JVM applications or systems-level processes

• AWS experience in production at scale

• Background in incident response and on-call duties

• Preferred experience in an enterprise SaaS environment

• Preferred familiarity with JVM internals, including garbage collection tuning and thread profiling

• Experience with multi-region deployments or sharding is preferred
