Staff Engineer, Retail

This is a fully remote position, open to applicants in Netherlands.

📋 Description

• Provide technical leadership across two engineering teams and related domains

• Create scalable distributed solutions for both frontend and backend

• Facilitate architectural decisions and make data-informed trade-offs regarding performance, security, reliability, maintainability, and cost

• Identify risks that extend beyond individual teams

• Stay hands-on in both frontend and backend development utilizing React and Java

• Shape customer-facing experiences and scalable backend functionalities

• Influence solutions from the discovery phase and system design all the way through implementation and production

• Assist in establishing the groundwork for native iOS and Android checkout experiences

• Drive practices related to architecture, performance, security, testing, observability, and reliability

• Develop reusable patterns, guidelines, and platform capabilities for recurring technical challenges

• Create alignment across Checkout, Payments, Orders, Shipping, and dependent teams

• Mentor engineers and facilitate discussions on architecture and design

• Collaborate with Product, UX, and engineering leadership on technical strategy

• Utilize data, metrics, and industry trends to prioritize impactful investments and technological decisions

⛳️ Requirements

• Profound, hands-on full-stack engineering expertise in React and Java

• Ownership of production for customer-facing frontend applications and backend services

• Ability to analyze broader systems and make trade-offs across architecture, performance, security, reliability, and maintainability

• Experience at the Staff/Principal level or equivalent technical scope

• Background in designing complex distributed systems and guiding architectural decisions across multiple teams or domains

• Proven track record of leading through influence and developing other engineers

• Capability to mentor seasoned engineers and facilitate architecture and design discussions

• Experience in establishing engineering standards and enabling high-quality technical decisions

• Strong business acumen and product judgment

• Effective collaboration with Product, UX, Security, SRE, and engineering stakeholders

• Ability to leverage metrics and evidence to inform decisions

• Experience in checkout, payments, orders, e-commerce, or marketplace systems is a significant advantage

• Familiarity with native Android/Kotlin or iOS/Swift development is beneficial

• Proficient in React.js, Next.js, Java, Spring Boot, SwiftUI, Swift, Kotlin, Android SDK, ES6, ESI, Varnish, Docker, Google Cloud, and Kubernetes
