Staff Engineer, Retail

This is a fully remote position, open to applicants in Netherlands.

📋 Description

• Provide technical leadership across two engineering teams and interconnected domains.

• Design scalable distributed solutions for both frontend and backend systems.

• Facilitate architectural decisions and make data-driven trade-offs concerning performance, security, reliability, maintainability, and cost.

• Identify risks that extend beyond the boundaries of a single team.

• Remain actively involved in both frontend and backend development using React and Java.

• Shape customer-facing experiences and develop scalable backend functionalities.

• Influence solutions from the discovery phase and system design to implementation and production.

• Assist in establishing the groundwork for future native iOS and Android checkout experiences.

• Promote the adoption of architectural, performance, security, testing, observability, and reliability practices.

• Transform recurring technical challenges into reusable patterns, guidelines, and platform capabilities.

• Create alignment between Checkout, Payments, Orders, Shipping, and related teams.

• Mentor engineers and facilitate discussions on architecture and design.

• Collaborate with Product, UX, and engineering leadership to identify opportunities and convert business needs into technical strategies.

• Utilize data, metrics, and industry trends to assess trade-offs and prioritize high-impact investments.

⛳️ Requirements

• Extensive, hands-on full-stack engineering expertise with React and Java.

• Experience with production ownership of customer-facing frontend applications and backend services.

• Ability to reason through architecture, performance, security, reliability, and maintainability considerations.

• Staff/Principal-level experience or equivalent technical responsibility.

• Proficient in designing complex distributed systems.

• Experience in driving architectural decisions that impact multiple teams or domains.

• Proven track record of leading through influence and nurturing the growth of other engineers.

• Capability to mentor seasoned engineers and lead architecture and design discussions.

• Skill in establishing engineering standards and facilitating high-quality technical decisions.

• Strong business acumen and product judgment.

• Effective collaboration with Product, UX, Security, SRE, and engineering stakeholders.

• Ability to leverage metrics and evidence to inform decision-making.

• Experience with checkout, payments, orders, e-commerce, or marketplace systems is highly advantageous.

• Familiarity with native Android/Kotlin or iOS/Swift development is a valuable asset.
