Staff Engineer, Checkout Platform

This is a fully remote position, open to applicants in Netherlands.

📋 Description

• Develop and enhance the Core Commerce Services platform

• Create scalable, channel-agnostic checkout functionalities from technical discovery and design to production

• Define APIs, domain boundaries, and integration methodologies

• Make decisions regarding scalability, reliability, security, observability, and maintainability

• Align technical decisions and integration agreements across Checkout, Payment, and related teams

• Maintain clear ownership boundaries across various engineering domains

• Mentor engineers through pairing, design discussions, code reviews, and providing technical feedback

• Elevate engineering standards within the team

• Collaborate with Product to convert business requirements into scalable technical solutions

• Establish the groundwork for AI-driven assistants, agentic commerce, and new channels

⛳️ Requirements

• Strong expertise in Java and backend engineering

• Experience in designing and building backend services, platforms, and large-scale distributed systems

• Hands-on experience in production coding

• Staff/Principal-level experience or equivalent senior technical leadership

• Strong capabilities in system design and architecture

• Ability to take significant technical ownership with a high degree of autonomy

• Comfort working in greenfield/0-to-1 environments

• Ability to explore options, assess trade-offs, and make pragmatic technical decisions

• Proven track record of mentoring engineers and leading through influence

• Experience with headless or traditional checkout, order management, SaaS/platform engineering, e-commerce, or marketplaces is a plus, but not mandatory
