Staff Engineer, Checkout Platform

This is a fully remote position, open to applicants in Netherlands.

📋 Description

• Develop and enhance the Core Commerce Services platform.

• Design scalable, channel-agnostic checkout functionalities from initial technical exploration and design to implementation and production.

• Specify APIs, domain boundaries, and integration methodologies.

• Make informed decisions regarding scalability, reliability, security, observability, and maintainability.

• Ensure alignment of technical choices and integration agreements among Checkout, Payment, and related teams.

• Maintain clear boundaries of ownership.

• Guide engineers through collaboration, design discussions, code evaluations, and technical feedback.

• Elevate engineering standards within the team.

• Collaborate with Product teams to convert business requirements into scalable technical solutions.

• Lay the groundwork for AI-driven assistants, agentic commerce, and new channels.

⛳️ Requirements

• Proficient in Java and backend engineering.

• Experience in designing and developing backend services, platforms, and large-scale distributed systems.

• Active contribution to production-level code.

• Staff/Principal-level experience or equivalent senior technical leadership qualifications.

• Strong capabilities in system design and architecture.

• Ability to assume significant technical ownership with a high degree of autonomy.

• Comfortable working in a greenfield or 0-to-1 setting.

• Competence in exploring options, assessing trade-offs, and making practical technical decisions.

• Proven track record in mentoring engineers and leading through influence.

• Experience with headless or traditional checkout, order management, SaaS/platform engineering, e-commerce, or marketplaces is an advantageous plus, but not mandatory.
