Staff Engineer

This is a fully remote position, open to applicants in New York.

📋 Description

• Establish the technical strategy for money transfer, AI-informed decisions, and the foundational platform.

• Design the progression of the ledger, decision-making, and platform systems.

• Elevate engineering standards through peer code review and collaborative programming.

• Assess the needs of processors, contractors, and program administrators.

• Develop, oversee, and enhance products end to end in a production environment.

• Assist in determining the appropriate use of AI models, rules, or human oversight for document verification, eligibility assessments, and fraud detection.

• Define metrics for evaluating AI-driven decisions.

• Manage the ledger, lender loan tape, and reconciliation with bank records.

• Ensure financial records are precise to the cent and ready for audits.

• Streamline outdated systems like Airtable into efficient in-house tools for operations and program configuration.

• Enhance CI speed, test-suite integrity, backups, database migrations, alerts, and workflows.

• Analyze production incidents, determine root causes, resolve issues, and document the outcomes.

• Contribute to the growth and recruitment of the engineering team.

⛳️ Requirements

• Over 8 years of experience in building production software.

• Proven track record as the individual responsible for system outages.

• Staff-level scope or equivalent impact experience.

• Experience leading the design of systems for other engineers to build upon, while remaining accountable in production.

• Extensive backend TypeScript experience, including with Bun, Node, Next.js, tRPC, Prisma, or similar technologies.

• Strong relational database expertise in MySQL or Postgres, including schema design, query plans, and migrations.

• Demonstrated ability to take on tasks beyond assigned responsibilities and successfully complete them.

• Proficient in debugging from fundamental principles and reasoning through the entire stack from browser to database and back.

• Strong knowledge of git, including rebase.

• Capability to extensively utilize AI agents while remaining the author and accountable for every line of code.

• Competence in defending PR code and articulating testing methodologies.

• Comfortable and skilled in compliance and security-intensive environments.

• Willingness to learn about rebate programs, underwriting, and contractor payments.

• Nice to have: Experience with Temporal or another workflow engine.

• Nice to have: Background in payments, ledgers, lending, or reconciliation.

• Nice to have: Familiarity with dbt, Snowflake, or other analytics tools.

• Nice to have: Experience in evaluating LLM output using test sets and metrics.

• Nice to have: Infrastructure experience with Pulumi, Docker, Vercel, Tailscale, Datadog, or Sentry.

• Nice to have: Experience in energy programs or utility software.

• Stack experience: TypeScript, Turborepo, pnpm, tsx, Bun, Next.js, React, tRPC, Prisma, MySQL, Postgres, Temporal, Python, Snowflake, dbt, Lightdash, Vercel, DigitalOcean, Pulumi, Datadog, Sentry, Claude Code, and internal agent tooling.
