Staff Engineer – Analytics, Data Architecture

This is a fully remote position, open to applicants in Canada.

📋 Description

• Take ownership of the data layer supporting the analytics product and architect the analytics framework along with the data model.

• Identify and resolve performance and scalability issues within the database.

• Manage the schema and data model for analytical datasets.

• Design and construct a multi-tiered analytics platform that encompasses the system of record, low-latency serving tier, and batch/ML tier.

• Make decisions regarding workload distribution among tiers based on measured latency, cost, and isolation metrics.

• Integrate observability features into the data layer to ensure early detection of issues.

• Collaborate with the ingestion team to maintain coherence in read and write pathways as schemas develop.

• Write code and influence the long-term direction of the analytics platform over multiple quarters.

⛳️ Requirements

• Extensive, hands-on experience managing a database or analytical store under concurrent, customer-facing loads.

• Capability to deduce a solution from a query plan.

• Proficient in SQL with a solid understanding of columnar / OLAP execution.

• Robust backend engineering experience; adept at reading and modifying a substantial codebase.

• Experience in data architecture, specifically in designing or significantly influencing a multi-tier data platform.

• Ability to justify architectural choices with empirical data.

• Experience with lakehouse architecture using technologies like Databricks, Spark, Delta Lake, Iceberg, or similar preferred.

• Familiarity in designing schemas for extensive, semi-structured event data preferred.

• Exposure to streaming ingestion with Kafka or analogous technologies preferred.

• Proven track record in migration or major re-architecture projects, particularly with cost/latency considerations preferred.

• Experience with ClickHouse is a plus.

• Familiarity with connection-pool and JDBC-level tuning is a plus.

• Knowledge of feature-flagged rollouts for changes in query engine behaviors is a plus.

• Contributions to open-source projects related to query engines or similar tools are a plus.

• Legal authorization to work in the country of the position is requested in the application form.
