Staff Data Engineer

This is a fully remote position, open to applicants in Germany, +3 more countries.

📋 Description

• Take full ownership of the data platform from start to finish, encompassing ingestion, the raw layer, ClickHouse warehouse, and the dbt project.

• Upgrade the current platform to enhance reliability, accuracy, and the integrity of historical data.

• Define and manage the parameters, denominators, eligibility criteria, and limitations for business metrics, beginning with the customer health score.

• Convert business inquiries from Customer Success, Sales, Product, and leadership into sustainable, defensible metrics.

• Oversee warehouse architecture, manage query costs, and facilitate data delivery surfaces for BI and CRM.

• Create authoritative written definitions for metrics visible to leadership and establish conventions for the expanding Data function.

• Allocate approximately 70% of your time to hands-on building and 30% to defining, documenting, and explaining processes.

• Report directly to the Head of Engineering and work collaboratively with data, infrastructure, and application engineers.

• Function as a senior individual contributor without responsibilities for line management.

⛳️ Requirements

• Extensive experience in data engineering or analytics engineering with hands-on ownership of a warehouse and transformation layer.

• Practical experience with ClickHouse in production environments.

• Proficient ownership of dbt, including working with incremental models, snapshots, tests, macros, and CI/CD processes.

• Experience in Python data engineering with EL tooling, S3, and CI-driven orchestration, managed end to end.

• Familiarity with product event streams such as PostHog, Amplitude, Segment, or Mixpanel.

• Understanding of user-to-company identity and group association challenges and their effects on downstream metrics.

• Proven experience in defining a business KPI from start to finish and effectively defending it to non-technical stakeholders.

• Strong analytical skills, including cohort analysis, correct denominator usage, and specifying sample size prior to findings.

• Ability to operate independently without waiting for assigned tasks.

• Comfortable presenting to senior and C-level stakeholders.

• Located within CET +/-2.

• Nice to have: Experience with Metabase administration, CRM and billing systems as data sources, dlt, GDPR-compliant data deletion, Grafana, German language skills, B2B SaaS, or legal-tech experience.

• Nice to have: Background in designing data for non-technical team members querying through AI tools.
