Staff Business Systems Engineer – Vertex Tax Systems

This is a fully remote position, open to applicants in California, +3 more states.

📋 Description

• Oversee the design, development, enhancement, and maintenance of Vertex tax solutions for global operations.

• Create scalable tax technology solutions that cater to Sales & Use Tax, VAT, GST, excise tax, withholding tax, and various other indirect tax obligations.

• Collaborate with Global Tax, Finance, Accounting, Revenue, Procurement, and Engineering teams to establish and execute tax system strategies.

• Develop, implement, and sustain integrations between Vertex and enterprise applications such as NetSuite, SAP, Workday, Salesforce, Coupa, billing platforms, e-commerce platforms, procurement systems, and data warehouses.

• Assist in global tax determination, tax calculation, exemption certificate management, tax reporting, tax returns, and audit compliance.

• Lead tax technology projects from the initial requirements phase through to architecture, development, testing, deployment, and post-production support.

• Promote automation of tax processes to enhance accuracy, compliance, operational efficiency, and scalability.

• Ensure tax systems adhere to SOX controls, audit standards, data governance policies, and regulatory requirements.

• Work with business stakeholders to assess new tax regulations and implement necessary system adjustments.

• Create technical designs, integration specifications, and solution documentation.

• Diagnose and resolve intricate tax calculation, integration, and compliance challenges across enterprise applications.

• Set best practices for tax technology architecture, integrations, monitoring, and operational support.

• Act as the primary technical subject matter expert for Vertex and enterprise tax systems.

⛳️ Requirements

• A Bachelor’s degree in Information Systems, Computer Science, Finance, Accounting, Business Administration, or a related discipline.

• Over 15 years of experience in the implementation and support of enterprise tax technology solutions.

• More than 10 years of practical experience with Vertex O Series or other Vertex tax products.

• In-depth understanding of Sales & Use Tax, VAT, GST, and global indirect tax compliance.

• Proven experience in implementing Vertex integrations with ERP platforms like NetSuite, SAP, or Oracle.

• Familiarity with integrating Vertex with procurement, billing, e-commerce, and financial applications.

• Strong knowledge of APIs, middleware, and iPaaS platforms like Workato, Boomi, MuleSoft, or similar technologies.

• Experience with REST/SOAP APIs, web services, and enterprise integration patterns.

• Understanding of tax content updates, jurisdiction management, tax regulations, and exemption certificate management.

• Experience in supporting tax audits, SOX controls, and compliance with regulations.

• Excellent analytical and troubleshooting abilities for complex tax system challenges.

• Demonstrated capability to lead large-scale enterprise initiatives and collaborate with cross-functional global teams.
